Loving the recent reworks Riot, but I think a rework to Rengar would be something that should be done.

Ok, so adding Trundle the the Freljord area I think is kinda cool. (no pun intended.)

But the quasi-heroic monster that took on the pain of a terrible curse to help his tribe and is then exiled because of it, is now a king that plunders and destroys villages? That's just cold.

This seems to be foreshadowing a move away from tragic hero and towards generic troll monster. I hope it's not so... But... Well.. I'll wait to hear the rest of the story, but for now my plans to unlock Trundle and learn how to play him are on hold...

It led to the scattered state of the lore that we can now see today. While it is unfortunate that this happened, Riot is now trying to fix their past mistakes and consolidate their lore base before they spread out further in the future. In my opinion, they had far too many champions that were the solitary representatives of their region just to try and get a name for every spot on the map (old Karthus lore, Zyra, Trundle, Zilean, etc) without having a solid representation of the city-states themselves. Seeing as the League of Legends is, in effect, a political forum for managing conflict using champions as proxies for actual armies, it would make far more sense that you would have the two primary types of champions: those that the League has captured and contained for the public good of Valoran (like Kog'Maw and Cho'Gath) and those who are there in exchange for a boon for their home city state (like Jayce, Darius, Garen, etc). There will be some oddities, such as those champions from the Shadow Isles, but by far the vast majority should (and as Riot's lore direction is going, will be) representatives of a city-state.

For the lazy TL;DR: Riot is working to consolidate their lore base from the scrambled mess it used to be into a more cohesive story. Once this is done, we will likely see more champions from outlying areas away from civilization.
Your forgetting the existence of unchanged and unaffiliated, possibly mercenary champions like Rammus, Rengar, Wukong, Ryze, Xerath, Zilean, ect.

Its not new to have champions not tied to the city-states, and trying to tie all of them to them in their background can easily cheapen those characters.

Riot doesn't need to tie such champions to a city state to flesh out a city state: they need to write more city-state lore.

(Like they did with the Freljord thread, though they should not have dragged Trundle into it.)

It may seem stupid, but what if this "new Trundle" was only a later version of him ? Did he spent his days, after joining the League, only eating and sleeping, or did he had some interaction with the outside (like other troll tribes) ? And since taking his tribe's curse also took their regeneration ability, fating them to a painful agony, what if they all died allowing him to be removed of the full-curse ?

Sounds unlikely, and it would kind of remove what made Trundle unique for no real reason.

Also, the physique looks like a strong troll, while Trundle is more of a runt troll.

(Trundle's main strength being his ability to use his curse against his foes by draining vitality. and even as a weak troll he is fairly strong by human standards.)

I think it wouldn't be too corny for Vayne could keep a diary on her ceaseless crusade against dark magic and the progress of her "purge" of the League of Legends. Ahri or Zyra could also catalog their experience with the humans of Runeterra.
...I think that'd run under "porn novels" then... Like...50 shades of botanica or something for Zyra... B> brainbleach pl0x

I actually really like this idea. His current lore is canon, but he has grown beyond it in the interim, mastering and/or removing his curse and becoming a stronger person all around, eventually finding a different tribe of wayward trolls and becoming their king. Unlikely, perhaps, but it would be an interesting way of handling such a large reworking of his style and theme.
