If you're really that bothered by Lux, just jungle or have your jungler run Hecarim. Lux problem solved.

Lux is Op, has always been OP, all of her abilities have ridiculous ranged and damage, but the worst of it is her ult CD, everyone knows that for its range and damage it's way too short a cd. When you see players regularly using her ult to one shot creep waves to prevent a tower push when a team fight is seconds away, you know the CD is too short. Lux gives zero fuks about wasting it because it will be back up before the fight is over away. You don't see other champs with long Ults like xerath using their ult to clear creeps pre team fight because their cd won't be back in time to clean up the fight.

IMO she is FOTM right now, which makes Lux mains like myself (since season 1 or early 2) upset when we see QQQQQQQQQQ LUX OP PLS NERF threads.

She has probably one of the most balanced kits in the game.
Until you see what happens when you get good ap on Lux and your shield is hitting for over 400 on EACH person it hits while it comes back to you. Lux was a sleeper OP champ. The meta shifted from League of Assassins in S2 to League of Bruisers in S3 because of the health meta. The health meta effectively stopped Assassins from 100%-0% on people making them worse. So, Lux can easily just sit in mid and be safe. Her range, utility, and scaling make her quite strong. The biggest reason Lux is "op" or "not" is because she is ALL skillshot based. So, if you miss that light-binding, or ult, there goes your burst. If you hit your combo though, there goes that AD carry, Non-tanky Support, and AP carry, INSTANTLY. All I can say is Dragonborns vs SK Games week 2. Two SK members got hit by the light-binding and instantly went from 100-0 in the burst. THAT is the problem with Lux. She is super strong with her scaling and the amazingly well-rounded kit. Need an engage? Light-binding. Need defense? Shield. Need vision of that bush? Her slow. Need a poke? Lazer, Light-binding, slow... She has EVERYTHING a team could want. Hell you could even be a "tank" because of her shield values being 180 (+.35AP) late game, so that's 360 (+.7AP) shield that she gets because it hits her and COMES BACK to her. . . you can't miss.

Lux is strong for the simple fact that the meta has changed and teams need more CC, tankiness, and poke now. Mids need some type of CC or buff to add to the team. Lux does that all. She is the FOTM because she is one of the STRONGEST mids if you can hit your skills. Lux has high base dmg and good scaling for the fact that she is only skill-shots and if you miss you lose. Lux is extremely strong or some might cry "OP" because of her kit. She either deletes your team, or you laugh as you walk over her because she hit nothing....

Orianna got incredible value out of Athene's and it got nerfed pretty hard.

Honestly Orianna is still quite strong, but she's hard to play so she's a rare pick.
