I'd update some of the stuff from my original post:

- You can indeed go pure damage AP if you have long range/zone control/ shields that scale with AP.
- Zeke's Herald on someone is high priority if you have multiple AD damage dealers, it's a must if you have 2+ ranged ADs.
- If you're being outpoked, don't feel like you need to force a fight before level 6. Hang way back and wait for ultimates.
- Supports don't need GP5 on murder bridge. You can go balls out on a real build or an aura build because you get just as much money as everyone else.
- Casters should start with Either a Tear or a Chalice. Tear is less mana early, more AP later. Chalice is more than enough mana to spam, and builds into the well rounded Athene's.
- Boots are overrated early on unless you're melee.

Synergy, balanced damage types, and a mix of poke and engage are great and all. But if you're going to talk dominant comps and metas in ARAM, healers are always great. Just the other game we got Soraka, Alistar, Sona, Galio, Quinn. Something like that will pretty much never, ever, ever lose.

It's pretty much what has already been said.
10 barriers. It's like revive on Dominion. It's just that important.
Flash is generally a no-no, unless you have a champ like amumu, morgana, galio, janna, kennen... where it can turn your ult into a huge power play.
Focus on mana sustain. A chalice can help you throw out your best poke as often as possible.
Bulwark is a 100% must buy. Figure out who will carry it.
With the huge amount of abilities flying, WotA is also huge, even for giving your ADs spellvamp.
Zeke's can work when you have a lot of AD, but is more situational.
Fheart is generally huge, unless the opposing team is all casters.
Every member on your team should build some durability, generally MR/health. Rare exceptions can be made for champs like Lux or Nidalee, who have an exceptional range and can STAY at that range.
When facing a team with high poke, the entire team needs to commit, and commit hard. Trying to play passively against heavy poke is a sure way to lose.

Oh, communicate about your Ultimate timing and coordination. People don't tend to do this on SR because teamfights tend to happen more predictably. ARAM needs the communication so you don't blow your ulti 10 seconds before someone else's ult synergy comes up.

Watch those green dots on the side bar!

Offering a specific addendum to this, you can go pure glass cannon with Karthus, and it works really well (still start tear though). He can poke, and he can kite, but once a teamfight gets rolling, make the enemy team PAY for it. Dearly. Once you're high enough levels and your q and e are sufficient, you can make real power plays by suiciding into the enemy team at the right moment (technically you want to go a little past them into their area of retreat). This gets compounded if your team has aoe lockdown of some sort like Sejauni or Amumu. Just make sure you know what you're doing or else you'll wind up feeding instead.

The enemy Annie trolls your Quinn with a full-zero winbear burst, and they build mr so now your team can't hurt them and they bulldoze over you with hecarim or somesuch initiator. That composition is real powerful, but far from unbeatable.

Basically everything Theungry said, but i'd like to add two things. Like bulwark frozen heart is another item that you'll want to assign to someone if you have multiple people that can use it its better for it to not be the same person getting your aegis so that you can get both asap. Also if your team has multiple AP damage dealers at least one of them should be building abyssal. (wotas also nice but less mandatory than the scepter)
