I know youre supposed to put wards in river, brush jungle etc but ive seen people put their wards right in the middle of the lane. Why do they do this?

If the tower is down it's good to have vision of the lane where it's closer to their base.
You'll know when people are going down that lane. If they're grouping to push it.
This is usually in mid lane though as that's the most likely lane a team will push for if they have those towers down.

Other than that, If it's during laning, that they're using vision wards for stealth champs... If not, no idea.

There are basically two reasons: towers are down and you need vision on mid lane or you need a pink ward to fight a stealth champion like Teemo, Twitch or Eve.

You might be surprised how many Teemos try the cheap trick of running directly to lane and stealthing, hoping to get an early kill. It's really fun to pink ward and smash them when they're out of position.

Regular wards placed in the middle of the mid lane are usually there once towers go down at major intersections of the jungle. That way you can see champions moving around high traffic areas when you otherwise would have no sight. It is also used as a strategy in certain types of poke/ re-engage comps so you can quickly disengage after seiging towers and still have vision of what the enemy are doing. This gives you very important intel when you back off to take objectives like dragon or the blue and red buffs, and warns you as to whether the enemy is staying back to defend their tower or following up on your disengage to protect the open map objectives. It allows you to re-engage on lone scouts that are trying to get a peek and are vulnerable by overextending, and prevents the entire enemy team from straight up catching you off guard with a hard re-engage as your attention is diverted on taking a dragon or baron down.
