So apparently .9999 repeating = 1

The question posed asks whether or not the two are exactly equal (no significant figures involved).

Apparently half the people in this thread do not understand repeating decimals.

..... i don't understand: i'm a united states citizen, i'm in high school, i know that .999999 repeating =1, hence 1/9= .11111111 8/9=.88888888....

so.... i mean... what's the big deal here?

perhaps i'm just using myself as too much of a baseline, i don't' know.

who ever uses fractions thinks this is true

1/9= .1 repeating
2/9=.2 repeating
3/9=1/3= .3 repeating
4/9= .4 reaping
5/9= .5 reapting
6/9=2/3= .6 reapting
7/9=.7 reapting
8/9=.8 repeating
9/9=3/3=1

but math is founded on patterns so its .9 repeating

The big deal is that, believe it or not, half the people in the US probably don't understand this concept.
