Well some things TF needs to be successful:
-Good positioning.
Never initiate with your ult. EVER =='
Poke at their front lines with stuns until you can get to the ADC. Then one shot them and walk away.
-Good ganks
Gank. All the time. If you have ult you should be either top of botlane.
Prepare a stun before teleporting.
Make sure you have 3/4 stacks of e.
Would say more but have to go =='

The biggest piece of advice that helped me succeed as TF is to really spam that blue card as much as you can. Anytime your W is up and you're not about to go all in on someone you should pull out a blue card and get mana back. You get extra damage and extra mana from the blue card so the benefits are crazy.

Also in late game when you have Lich Bane once you get your E stacked you can pull out any color card to deal massive damage. I once killed a nidalee I was chasing with a blue card because I missed gold and hit blue on accident so I just threw it and happened to have E stacked and lich bane proc'd and it melted her from almost half health.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS! Dumb TF's are easy kills when they ulti in. Simply have your gold card ready can deter fights. Try to have your E up when you do throw a gold card.
EDIT: Oh and try him on dominion. His ultimate makes for awesome point control.

Ok, so, here's how Pick a Card works.
Even after you lock in your card, the tick between red, blue, and gold still goes, you just can't see it.
Whichever card it's at (invisibly) when you throw the card is what the next cycle will start at.
Abuse this to always get gold cards first for clutch stuns.

Also, gregorymacro covers everything else you need.

Gold and red cards are extremely good for teamfights, whichever people prefer is up to them. When you are ganking a lane with ult, always have gold card up before you teleport in.
