time for numbers!

Let's say that Malzahar is level 18 and has 300 ap, a relatively average situation.
Let's also say his target is relatively tanky with 3000 hp and 100 magic resist.

Assuming no magic penetration (just for simplicity's sake) Malzahar's ultimate does (550+390)/2 magic damage. This gives us 470 damage from this ability over the course of 2.5 seconds on a single target. Also suppression.

Malzahar's Null Zone in that same situation will do [(0.08+0.03)3000]/2 magic damage per second. Multiplied by 2.5 for the same duration as Malz's ultimate and we get a final number of 412.5 magic damage. Let's not forget that this ability lasts for another 2.5 seconds, is aoe, and has a cooldown of 14 seconds.

The damage on this ability is fantastic against high hp targets but let's look at a squishy. We'll say Malz is built the exact same way but his target only has 1800 hp rather than 3000. His ultimate will still do 470 magic over 2.5 seconds and his Null Zone will do [(0.08+0.03)1800]/2 magic damage. This brings us to a tally of 247.5 magic damage over that same length of time. That's still some very good aoe damage, even if it's not against a tank. Let's not forget that it's completely fire-and-forget now that it has no cast animation.

So yeah, Malz's W can be a tad underwhelming against squishier targets but he'll likely blow them up with his other abilities anyway. The aoe % health damage is just icing.

He seems to be pretty popular on Dominion. As both AP and AD. It's quite interesting to look into, AD Dom Malz.

Now lets look at malzahar with 0 ap and opponents with 100 MR.

Everyone who has built MR did spent less on other things.
MR itemization has limitations
Those who built HP will now suffer from the effects of building HP as opposed to MR.
lifesteal champions will likely profit
those who can't afford to avoid this attack will be subject to any onspell abilities he may have or auras that have been built.
Mal can build as he pleases and probably will have some sort of tankyness. He can just spam all day and suppress people.
Initiators will not be getting more than one chance to get the show started right.

Unfortunately he will be dealing 3% less damage since he doesnt have the 300 AP and he probably wont get kills. But this game isnt about kills and he doesnt need to fry brains everytime he presses R.

I'm sure there are downsides to this but I think this can be very useful on some team especially with rylais and liandries (not that he'll be needing his own slows.)
