League of Legends has grown quite exponentially since its humble beginnings, and it seems that the number of champions have too much game-changing power by themselves for the number of bans to keep up with. I think we should up the bans to maybe 5 per team as to the 3 per game just because of the majority of champions we now have at our selection that are just too powerful too easily. The most frequent picks are usually Blitz-crank, Malphite, Alistar, Shen, Amumu and then usually between Skarner, Elise, and Khazix, but where's the space for Champions like Darius, Jayce, and Shaco?. I don't mean to sound like a brat but the champion repertoire and the multiple capabilities new ones have is just to much for the regular ban number to keep up with.

You're best off learning how to play against every champion, because the current ban number makes it so that there's an actual tradeoff for banning the teamfight kings - having to deal with possible lane matchups and other issues. Zileas has talked extensively about the problem with >6 bans at high levels of play - with too many bans you run the risk of banning out an entire playstyle just on your own bans. Look at Gambit Gaming vs Azubu - they knew which AD carries Azubu was comfortable with and just banned all of them. However, they were forced to leave other roles open and unbanned. With >6 bans, this sort of tactic (which is a big deal at high level play) would get far more powerful and more common.

those champs are the most common bans because people dont really like, or just dont know how to deal with them. for example, skarner, he is one of the most mana dependant junglers (this can be said for amumu aswell), if you want to stop him from becoming a problem lategame you must stomp his earlygame by invading his blue; keeping its timer, and organizing buff steals; warding jungle entrances and exits so he cant get any early kills, and keeping an eye on your jungler as he counterjungles him.
