Why are all Dota 2 heroes free as opposed to LoL?

It's been announced it's going to be free.
It'll be free, doesn't mean that the selling strategy won't be like LoL. Today, everyone can play with all heroes because it's in beta, so you need to test that. Once is out we'll see how they'll earn money from it.

Those invites are so hard to earn.

The game is pretty much beta only in name right now (kind of like Path of Exile that just went into open beta, but is pretty much released).

The business model is the EXACT same as it is going to be on release.

All champions will be free and you can buy cosmetic items for real cash.

As people have already pointed out, Valve owns Steam. They can pretty much give away every game for free and still do just fine. All of their games because massive ads for Steam anyways since you need it to download the game.

Valve isn't greedy though and they aren't run by chinese based company named Tencent which is known for ruining games with it's cash shops.

1. For the most part, all the posts about Valve having more money are correct. As a company, Valve also has a better marketing plan and sales income.

2. Customized items work for valve because anyone can create cool items that take very little effort to integrate into the game system.

3. Dota's champions are more of a rock paper scissor game then pick a team composition. It will end up usually, Pick this specific hero to make this champ useless, then pick a hero to make the hero counter pick useless, and so on and so forth. Dota is far more complicated (just look at damn invoker) and while it may take a month or 2 to learn the champs and their abilities on sight. having a mastered knowledge base of DOTA is far longer.

Haven't played DOTA 2 or anything, but I'm sure they have something in their shop to bring in revenue. Nothing is free.

Are you sure you're talking about the right economic policy there?

50% of DotA/Dota 2 is counter picking the other team.

Requiring people to unlock heroes in Dota 2 hurts the gameplay and ruins balance.
