Hypothetically speaking, say my dad came home really angry and started breaking shlt and was very violent, but didn't physically hurt anyone, what would happen if I called the cops? What would the process be? Would he be allowed back home?

What if I felt my life was threatened? What if he had hit my mother before in the past? Could I use that in my defense despite it did not happen on this particular night?

Yes you can call the police. A better option would be to move out.

I don't see why.
Person has a right to smash their own things.

Also you and your mother are adults.
And you arent trapped.
If you felt/feel threatened ... leave.

They were my mother's things, actually.

We are adults, but I have an illness and she owns this house just as much as him. Why should we leave when he's the one who should?

I've never considered taking action on his unstable actions until more recently. My mom hasn't either. My dad isn't as bad as some people, but I constantly have anxiety because he is so fickle and scary when he does explode.

He gets mad just because I don't talk to him, which is his own fault for scaring the shlt out of me my entire life.
