I'm starting to think that maybe if you're picking a champion with low sustain or not much sustain, that Flask + Pots + Maybe a Ward is the way to go nowadays instead of Boots + 3 pots? That way you can sustain in lane longer, and when you go back for your first time, you'll have enough for Boots + Whatever you normally get.

What do you guys think? Flask + Pots + Ward vs. Boots + 3 Pots? Or do you guys have another idea?

I think it's more a case of your matchup.

Boots and 3 potions gives you an MS edge which will help you play more aggressively. If you think you'll win your lane fairly handily or you won't be taking much damage. Example, Teemo vs Nasus.

Flask and pots and ward is safer and gives you a crapload of sustain which can be good for early spell spam harrass or just to keep in the lane for ages. The ward also gives some ganking protection. I would go with this if I expect a difficult lane OR I might go with the good old cloth armor and 5 potions route, but it would depend on who I'm playing/who I'm against. I'd opt for cloth and 5 potions against a riven or renekton for example.

For supports, I love doing flask+wards. I'm less sure about the other roles, but it gives wonderful sustain until I have items.
