Morello doesn't hate healing abilities, e hates the idea of a character whose only function was to heal his/her allies. I see boring healers in other games, and at least Soraka fills out other purposes, and is more interesting then they are.

- A dedicated healer is soraka, her only job is to heal and once you are ignited, her helping potential is GREATLY reduced.
- A healer is someone that can restore your hp when needed. Taric, Kayle, Nidalee, Alistar... they're all healers, but ignite their friend and they will still CC/damage your ass out... healing is only a secondary tool to help you reach your goal.
- Someone that can heal is anyone that can make you regain your health faster. Shen is someone that can heal, without being a healer, and so is heimerdinger (this one is arguable tho). This one uses healing as a 10th tool to reach a goal. Basically, their heal's first goal isn't even healing. I consider Lulu, and arguably Janna, to also fall in this category.

Now please understand something, A non-healing support is fun (leona, nunu, lulu). An healing support is also fun and, while safer, also has lower kill potential. But a dedicated healer is terribly boring (how many people do you know consider support soraka to be the funnest champion in LoL?), and there is a reason for it. The gameplay is all but aggressive (don't get me wrong ,you can be aggressive with soraka, but her kit still won't be... the only reason you can be aggressive with her is that you can outlast the counter-attack, turning a trade into an harass).

So yeah, I kinda understand Morello when he says he doesn't want more dedicated healer (especially since there isn't too much room for a 2nd dedicated healer... it would've to be an AoE Healer and it would probably be VERY powerful [look at karma, with cs])
I completely agree with you on this. I'm fine with no more Dedicated healers. Soraka is enough.

Problem being, Soraka is currently at a state where, outside of EXTREMELY lower-leveled play, she isn't terribly useful as a Support anymore. At least, not where her heals are concerned. And this is where I see the problem. Our dedicated healer is a dedicated piece of junk in her department.

When half of your kit is busted, it's time for a reevaluation.

Hey folks,

As I’ve been hinting at for a little while now, the next champion is our new support character. While we’ll get to the details on her in the next few days, I wanted to pull back the curtain on what “support champion” means when we set out to create one.

First up, let’s discuss the differences between support characters, and the lane assignment of support – they overlap a lot, but they’re not the same:

  • Support characters are defined by being assisters and enablers for their allies – this is the core “support psychology” we want to achieve. Good examples of these characters are Janna, Lulu or Sona.
  • Support as a lane role is any character that can thrive on less gold, and has a strong lane presence – either offensively or defensively. Characters from the previous definition often fit here, but other characters go here a lot. For example: Leona is a tank, but plays the support role in a team. Alistar is a little of both because he’s a great linebacker.

So, with that out of the way: when we talk about a support character (like Nami – the new one!) we mean the first definition. Zyra, while able to play the support role, is not a support champion by these definitions – she’s more like a mage with an off-spec.

So, why should you care about Nami? Let me tell you!

  • She brings a combination of defensive utility (including a way to heal in combat situations!) and offensive “set-up”
  • She’s the water caster that you’ve anticipated for a long time – with a support leaning
  • She’s a regal mermaid – an archetype I think we can agree is a needed addition to the League lineup
  • Her offensive setup features a skillshot-style paradigm, something supports have only really had with Lulu; we wanted to expand a bit
  • While this is the concept art and the final has changed (as all concepts do through development), she’s drawn by the ridiculously talented Gem Lim

We’ve learned a lot of lessons from our supports, and think Nami shows how we can make a character who satisfies the core support psychology, and is healthy for the game. And with our commitment to developing a variety of champions, you’ll be seeing more supports coming next year – so this is far from the last example of that.

Look for more exact details, including skills and more art, in the upcoming days – and you will be able to check out Nami on the Public Beta Realm soon, too.
I'm excited for this new champ, but it sounds like you guys are going to make Zyra support unviable. I really hope this isn't the case, since I find Zyra when i play ad carry (as well as Leona, like you mentioned) support really fun, unique, and rewarding, as do several of my friends that play her and other support champions.

Oh and ty for makying an awesome game, I love LoL!

does any of her support abilities scale well enough to allow her to support carry in a sense, basically does her supporting scale, or is it like all % and such that don't really scale.

I don't know how balanced it would be but i think somone who had a scaling speed boost or something like that would be cool; definitely if they have no AP damaging skills so its a choice between that and support items
