Top Lane is a ticklefight on a tightrope. Don't expect to win until you've figured out that tempo.

Also, yes you always have to consider that you are not only up against the other top laner but the other jungler too. Assume that yours isnt coming and if they do, just be grateful.

The reason you are having trouble top is because it is a role that requires a lot more knowledge than mid lane, though I am not saying that mid laners don't have this kind of knowledge, as the best mid laners do.

Also buying gp5 is not always a good idea. Remember that gp5 make you weaker, so if you were to get ahead in lane, and instantly bought a gp5, you are basically sacrificing that advantage just so you can get gp5. How is that so? Well you could have used that gold for something else such as a defensive or offensive item that could have put the enemy at a greater disadvantage.

I agree, I main top lane and i can tell you that comparing to other lanes top lane is much harder. Usually if you get killed first its hard to come back, if you get killed twice all what you can do is hug your tower. That's why When you play top lane make sure to master your champion first. Its very important to know how your champion will react against the enemy champion.

Try to play OP champions Because those champions usually have very few counters and scale very well late game.

Example: Yorick, Irelia, Darius, Jax, Riven, Rengar, this is my pool champions i learned and mastered all of them so i can face in lane any champion in the game.

Watch streams, read guides helped me a lot maybe it will for you too.

Good luck.

Think of trading up top (especially, at least) to how boxers sometimes throw a few fast punches to gauge their reach vs their opponent's.

In the same way - trading top lane should be a gauge used to figure out how much damage your skills do to them at that moment so you can judge when you can all-in and when you should stay away. Eventually if you play that character enough you can judge this fairly well without trading.

match ups are pretty important. early game I like to play passively, farming and exchanging whenever the enemy gets too close to me. Then, you need to be watching the minimap, and if you see the enemy jungler in mid or bot lanes, you know you have a window to be aggressive if you want to.

Then on first trip back, obviously buy wards.

It's all about knowing when you can afford to be aggressive. Also, it is good to be aggressive as much as possible, as the enemy will not suspect that you are trying to initiate for a gank when your jungler shows up. It's happened to me so many times, that a laner gives away the fact that their jungler is there by suddenly becoming aggressive randomly or when I walk near a bush.

But since I always try to be aggressive, I don't telegraph ganks as much for that reason,

1 enemy jungler gank and I'm behind 2 levels, enemy laner is freezing the lane and jungler doesn't help, despite numerous pings and requests.. Soooooo.. I just sat in the bush gaining XP and farming like a little girl, getting as many creeps as I could, but the other guy was just a monster by that point that he could just bully me out of lane (due to a grand total of 1 [one] jungler gank)..

What do you usually do in this situation? I couldn't 1v1 the guy little less trade with him, and our jungler was also so far behind that he'd end up giving the enemy a double kill.. I kept taking golems and wraiths when our jungler went bot, and came back to my tower when it was pushed to clear it (thats when the enemy laner dove me at one point for yet another kill)..

Bought GP10 and just farmed wherever I could (asked to switch with bot lane after they took bot turret), and farmed at any lane whenever someone was absent, and even pushed turrets when I saw all 5 of the enemy mid..

P.S.
I did come back and even had a nice 8k streak (legendary status, started 0/4, ended 9/8/8), but in the end we threw the game after 2 non-contested barons and 1 bad play. (just their nexus was left, and 2 inhibitor turrets vs 8 of our turrets.. My team wanted to rush the nexus, but I really wanted to take the other inhibitors out to improve our chances since the enemy team was way ahead of us but we were more effective at taking turrets (was I wrong? were they impatient?).. I'm guessing my early game would have convinced my team that my ideas were probably not the right ones..

td;dr: Pls read, I want to get better at all positions and shot-calling (or an attempt at shot calling, since it seems every game no-one knows what to do late game)..
Mid lane is the easiest lane in LoL, Top lane is an extremely harsh lane where one mistake will lose you the entire lane phase. All you have to do is just not make those mistakes, ward better, pick a more mobile champ to escape ganks if you suck at warding, work on your CS, and so on so forth. There is no real "trick" to top lane other than just playing better.

First of all, dont fight on your enemy minion wave.

Second, see if his jungler can do a lvl 2 gank (shyv, mundo, lee sin.) If so, play passive early. No? Well the enemy jungler might try to gank you at 3:00-3:40.

After that... ward.

Third, farm.

Fourth, make your opponent know who you are. Everytime he goes for a cs, you AA him. Ofcourse do this if you arent gonna lose a cs.

Five, you can shove your lane then go back and force a dragon optional.

Six, your opponent has been mia for sometime/you saw him at bot? Destroy his tower, and keep pushing.

Seven, stay cool.

Eight don't first pick top. If you do, pick a safe top or someone who can go in different lanes or jungle

Edit : Nine, if your opponent miss a skillshot, use a skill on a minion, be aggressive.
You will have most likely 1 more offensive skill than him
