Silence: An Essential Element For A Dynamic Personality

LIFE is a natural factor and process within the varied yet uniform realm of Mother Nature. Watching the work of this wonderful nature one simply becomes wonder struck. The more we are near her, the more we feel her efficiency and divinity. She silently reminds us of the worth and value of steadiness, stillness and silence. Like the modern man, she does not seek "Speed" for efficiency. Like the modern man she does not seek "change" for beauty. When we closely observe her, even in her change there is a "changeless change". One simply needs a superior sense of wisdom to sense the secret of her working efficiency.

"Seekers of peace, may you be normal, may you be natural." This is what nature silently whispers to us. She also shows the way to normality through examples. Look at the air, when it is still and steady, it is normal and innocent, but the same air in motions becomes violent and furious like the wind and the storm. Similar is the water, watch the huge noisy waves that rise and fall in motion; watch the still and silent water you drink. What a difference! And yet both are water and water only!

To be silent therefore is to be natural; to be silent is to be normal; to be silent is to be original; to be silent is to be real; to be silent is to be ideal; to be silent is to be equal to be silent is to be beautiful; to be silent is to be at home. Look at the balance- in stillness and silence alone it maintains equilibrium. Therefore, if you want to revert to normality or equanimity, may you be still and silent.

Silence does not mean complete abstention from speech. To talk with restraint, to talk only when necessary, to talk less, and to abstain temporarily from speech when necessary, are all silence. In order to speak we have to think, plan and put in some effort. To be silent we need to do nothing, except the wish to do so and the will to practice it.

Observance of silence is important for the development of a dynamic personality because of its multitude advantages. Considering the results it produces, Silence can be grouped under different types such as 'Creative Silence', 'Meditative Silence', 'Provocative Silence', 'Curative Silence', 'Positive Silence', 'Negative Silence' and so on. Some of the advantages of Silence include:

Silence increases the "will power".
Silence makes us serious, introvert and introspective.
Silence sharpens the intellect. Power of voluntary recollection (memory) and power of grasping are increased. According to the research carried out by scientists in the USA, children learn more before they start speaking. The report also says that human babies even have the ability to recognize the voices and poems that they first heard in the womb before they are born.

For concentration and meditation, silence is an essential pre-requisite. Therefore, silence is prescribed as a spiritual discipline in most of the religions.

Inner voice is heard in silence. Truth is revealed in silence. Divinity of the Self is unfolded in silence.

Comparatively we cause injury to others more by speech than by any other means. We talk ill of others through insults, harshness, abuse, irony, ridicule and sarcasm- causing quarrels and misunderstanding. Too much time is also wasted by indulging in useless and futile talks both by the person who talks and the listener who are dragged into conversation. Speech is the most transacted business and most misused human talent.

One of the main causes of personality conflict is due to lack of restraint in speech.

Silence has curative effect on stomach ulcers and throat disease. Silence is prescribed by ENT specialists in acute and chronic laryngitis and other vocal disorders. Silence aids to maintain digestive peace. Frequent and too much talking dries up the saliva in the mouth. They chew less who are habituated to talk too much. Silence is prescribed while taking food.

Silence helps to:
Face a situation of mental or physical stress involving fear, anger, hatred, excessive joy or sorrow and similar emotions, through the proper release of hormones (adrenal or non-adrenal). The first, worst and most forceful outlet of anger is speech. If checked by silence anger and much of its evil consequences can be averted.

To maintain breathing regularity, which in turn brings emotional balance and helps still the mind. The only physical approach to the mind is through breathing regularity. In case of prolonged talk, a large volume of air is required to be inhaled and breathing through the mouth is to be resorted to which is unhealthy both for the body and the mind.

What some of the great minds of our world have said about Silence:
According to Matthew Prior, man is a product of his thoughts. Thoughts grow well in silence. Thoughts mature in silence. Thoughts become creative in silence. Clarity and brevity of thoughts are attained through silence. Unhealthy and unwanted thoughts are flushed out in silence like a drainage. "They never taste who always drink. They always talk who never think"

Mahatma Gandhi: Silent is the meek, humble, noble, powerful. "It is better in prayer to have a heart without words, than words without a heart."

Mr. Eric Lennanberg: a Harvard Psycho-linguist, there are as many as ten to fifteen thousand neuromuscular events in one minute's speech. These neuromuscular events have its effect on the body and mind, transforming the human personality particularly through the sympathetic and par-sympathetic nervous system, which are of vital importance in a situation of stress.

Maharishi Raman: Silence is of four kinds. Silence of speech, Silence of the eyes, Silence of the ear and Silence of the mind. Only the last is pure silence and is the most important. Silence is the only Eternal Speech- the one Word, the Heart to Heart talk. Silence is like the even flow of electric current. Speech is like obstructing the current used for lighting and other purposes.

Madame Guyon: there are three kinds of Silence. Silence from words is good because inordinate speaking tends to evil. Silence or rest from desire and passions is still better, because it promotes quietness of the spirit. But the best of all is Silence from unnecessary and wandering thoughts because that is essential energy to internal recollection and because it lays a foundation for a proper reputation and for silence in other respects.

Aurobindo: there are two kinds of Silence- the helpless stillness of inertia which heralds dissolution and the stillness of assured sovereignty which commands the harmony of life. The strength of noise and activity is doubtless great. But infinite is the strength of stillness and the silence in which great forces prepare for action. The truest expression comes out of absolute inner silence.

Silence has also its own disadvantages to a little extent because speech is a Godly gift to human beings, directed to the welfare of each other and also for self-improvement. According to Thomas Mann, Speech is civilization itself. The word, even the most contradictory word preserves contact, it is silence which isolates.

Liberty of Speech is a human right; while Silence is our nature!

Silence is our nature
You silently watch your own nature:
When you are cautious you are silent,
When you are conscientious you are silent,
When you are contemplative you are silent,
When you are conversant you are silent,
When you are calm and collected you are silent,
When you are convinced you are silent,
When you are consoled you are silent,
When you are complete you are silent,
When you are communed you are silent.
You:
You see well in silence; you hear well in silence
You smell well in silence; you speak well in silence
You touch and taste well in silence
You wish and will silently; you seen and search silently
You love and long silently; you win and wonder silently
You plan and progress silently; you peep and pray silently
You live and grow silently; You silently slip into smile and sleep

SILENCE: Without it no good work is done.
SILENCE: Without it no great work is done.
SILENCE: Without it no real work is done.

SILENCE: Yes it is the secret of secrecy
It is the technique of accuracy
It is the echo of success

YET HOW LITTLE WE VALUE SILENCE!

"Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves"
