It hasn't been mentioned yet, but movespeed is very important for an auto attack melee character. Movespeed quints are particularly handy (but use up your precious quint slots..). Higher movespeed means its easier to catch your opponent and keep up with them. It's also very important to manually move forward between auto attacks. If you rely on the game's "come within attack range, attack, and chase after if they leave range" then you spend a lot of time chasing and not so much time attacking. Again, this works better the faster you are.

Beyond that, sustain and survivability like the others have said. I would recommend for any melee character that eventually builds a phantom dancer to get your zeal either right before or after your phage. That of course depends on how well you're doing, how much survivability you already have, and how much cc other people on your team can provide.

All of the characters you've been mentioning are casters though... My advice really applies more to things like Yi or Tryndamere :\ As a melee caster, you have two options. Either don't get hit by the enemy, or make them pay for it. Poppy you don't want to poke at too much because she can just turn around and combo you for a ton of damage, especially if there's a wall around. After you pop your combo, you really want to get out though.

The best thing for a Melee champion is having a good team. A ranged champion can get away with doing their damage without their team backing them up a lot easier than a melee champ can. With the assassins, you NEED NEED NEED someone initiating and taking for you, with Bruisers, you need your team doing damage, because you can't tank all 5 of them for very long, your tank need to disrupt them, with tank, your initiate needs to be followed up, because even if you can withstand 5-man aggression, you can't get any kills, and you'll go down eventually if you're getting focused.

Try using tanks or bruisers. Learn basic melee play with someone who can take damage before trying a carry. Build some survivability (Health, Health regen, lifesteal if you're able to hit minions without getting poked/harassed) or stay back unless you're sure that you can kill your enemies or do significant damage without taking too much. Don't get kited by ranged champs; try to avoid harassment. Be patient and ask your jungler for ganks when you're getting pushed to your turret.
