I've been searching through the wiki and the forums and haven't quite found the length of the wars.
Does someone know?

It started so long ago that even the wiki and forums don't have records of when it started

Makes sense.
I-I guess I'll just hit my head against a wall.
Good night.

Considering that there is a rune wars renekton skin I would love to know more about this through either a league meta plot line that works with the game.

Hopefully they unveil for season 3 since season 2 is coming to a close.

Well, even though this is some momentary info which has no solid backing in the written Lore and was obtained a bit behind the scenes, it's canon enough to make sense - so, here:

There were 5 Rune Wars total so far. The wars became increasingly shorter as time went on, until the latest one was about only a few years in length.

Rune War I. ...Long-long ago, several millienia before Runeterra and Valoran were shaped as they are now, humans and gods still walked together. Gods were still finalizing their creation of this world, and taught humans the arts of survival, life, and (of course), magic. That was quite a long period - you can think of it as the B.C. era in Earth chronology. As humans mastered all that those divine entities taught them, it was only natural for them to soon enough multiply in numbers, and begin to doubt the goodwill of their masters.

It was then that the first Rune War broke out - it wasn't dubbed a Rune War even, but as it lasted, mortals struggled against gods, and mastered the arcane arts to impossible extents. Grand artifacts were created, and what we now know as Rune Magic was invented - the power to control the forces of the world itself. Gods were defeated, and driven away from Runeterra, yet they were not slain, as you can't truly slay a divine being. Men triumphed, but the world was never the same - both sides invoked such powerful magic that the very face of Valoran was changed beyond recognition - shards of it had separated and became islands, and continents have divided.

No one even knows how long the first war lasted, but a rough estimate of ~1000 years can be put here.

Rune War II. After times of peace, this was the period of the first lands divide - initial kingdom formations were made, and men built their own prosperity, no longer restrained by the gods who watched them. Long times have passed until divided humans met each other again - the kingdoms grew as people multiplied, and finally it was time to make contact and decide on the borders between countries. And, how did you guess, territorial disputes broke out immediately, soon escalating into the second Rune War.

The second Rune War was possibly even more fierce than the first - Valoran and several outer lands were changed beyond recognition by the insane force of Rune Mages. Parts of the land bear abnormal climate even now, as seen by the freezing Freljord tundra bordering with the Serpentine Jungle, or the Great Barrier mountain chain which was rumored to have been created in a single spell.

The second Rune War lasted for several centuries, until the largest kingdoms fell into internal disputes and no longer had the time to wage warfare on the outside.

Rune War III.
After the second Rune War, people took their time to rebuild and adjust to the new shape of the land they lived upon. Much time passed since then, and grand magicians passed away, carrying away the secrets of Rune Magic with them, along with ancient artifacts. It was a downshift from what was seen before. Enough time had passed, and kingdoms that we now know have been formed - Demacia proclaimed its creation, Ionian culture has been steadily growing, and in the East of Valoran, three separate kingdoms of Noxus struggled for power. That was roughly 400 years ago, when the war began once more.

The three kingdoms of Noxus had initiated it - in their struggle for supremacy, it was both a civil war and a territorial expansion. That was the first time when Demacia and Noxus clashed. This war, however, was rather peaceful in its use of magic - very few powerful mages walked the land then, and the fine arts of tactics and strategy bloomed in this war where the battles were no longer decided by who had the more potent mage.

This war lasted for about 200 years - Demacia and Noxus settled on their borders, and Southern Noxus won the internal struggle, forming the structure and ideology of the Noxus we see now.

Note: Just before the third war started, your faithful had arrived on Valoran as well, and even contributed to South Noxus' victory, which he now regrets. Those were good times.

Rune War IV. The two great kingdoms may have settled, but in reality, it was but a calm before the storm - the tales and myths of maged of old days were still alive, and both states set out on a quest to discover their secrets, and reinvent the magic which had shaped the lands they lived upon. It was a Renaissance of magic arts - Rune Magic was found once more, and many great minds took to studying it. Almost unilaterally, both states went all-in in a frightening clash of power. It was a war of attrition between two amazing predators, the golden beast of Demacia and the jade serpent of Noxus.

This war has caused many cataclysms to happen, yet now on a local scale. Several Marshes that we now see mapped owe their existence to the fourth war, and the Serpentine River changed its path several times.

However, this struggle ended in a surprising peace treaty - the current borders that we now see on our maps were decided then, and both city-states could only heal their wounds. The war lasted for several decades, and nowadays there still are people who remember it.

Rune War V. The final Rune War began spontaneously - the official version was that it all began with another border dispute, but the more common belief is that it was orchestrated by both major city-states who sought to expand their borders. This time, even the small cities were involved in the war - in our terms, it was a "World War", but it wasn't meant to last for long.

Several breakthroughs were made, and methods dated with runes of the first two wars were discovered earlier before the conflict. When just one of them was fielded, there was... feedback from the planet itself. Runeterra made it clear that it was exhausted now - it could no longer sustain displays of power akin to those that were used in Rune War I or II. An agreement was made by the countries, and the League was created to maintain order on Valoran in stead of wars, as well as regulate the use of magic.

New year count was imposed that day - the new era, CLE, has started. That was 22 years ago.

The total timeline would look like this:
?? peace --> Rune War I (~1000 years) --> Peace (~600 years) --> Rune War II (~400 years) --> Peace (~350 years), city-states formed --> Rune War III (200 years), current city-states formed --> Peace (~50 years) --> Rune War IV (~60 years) --> Almost not peace (30 years) --> Rune War V (~10 years) --> League Creation, 22 years of peace --> NOW
