Johannes approached the horse salesman. "How much for a horse?"

The salesman gave him a crooked smile. "If you have to ask, it's too expensive."

He sighed deeply. "Or, it's just that they don't have a pricetag on them. How much do they cost?"

The merchant thought for a moment. "A thousand valor. No less."

Without flinching, Johannes dumped the money on the table, jumped on a horse, and followed after the others, not bothering to wait around for the merchant to make a second price. Although he wasn't full-out galloping, he still made it to the canyon in a nice clip. Weaving through it carefully, he sighed deeply. This was certainly the life.

((Very casual, for a Mercenary.))

As they reached the canyon, Kyther smiled; his wingspan would be small enough for him to fly through with little more than a touch of fancy flying. "See you at the first checkpoint!" he called to Dawn and Johannes as he passed over them, weaving around a pillar of rock jutting out of the ground as he made his way through the canyon. Suddenly, one of his rotors began to make a horrible grating sound, smoke fuming from the motor. The uneven thrust sent him into a spin, but he quickly hit the emergency stop, which collapsed his wings and shut off the rotors. With nothing to keep him airborne, he crashed to the ground, skidding to a halt. "Owww" he complained as he stood up, brushing the dirt off his clothes. It was fortunate the spin had reduced his velocity, letting him escape with nothing more then bruises. He twisted his head backwards to examine the damaged propeller, which still emitted an occasional curl of smoke. Repairs would have to wait; for now, he would have to be content with following the canyon on foot. He glanced backward at the rest of the participants in the distance, momentarily contemplating waiting for his new companions to catch up. Thinking better of it, he hiked his pack up higher onto his back and began the trudge down the canyon floor.

How surprising how vast the desert was. In the first stretch of the race many were already isolated, spread far apart from the others. Perhaps they thought of circumventing the checkpoint and heading straight for the endpoint? Or perhaps their path was so wide that they could go days without ever crossing each other. No matter, one group decided to use something that had not been seen in Valoran in many centuries. That was how desperate they were to win. That was how precious the treasure. A strong gust blew behind them, kicking up a sandstorm as it propelled their sand-ship along.

When the race started, Metuo started off pretty strong and pulled himself ahead of the general melee which accompanied such large races. Thanks to that, Mainfe and Metuo managed to avoid encountering any of the "accidents" which befell some of the less wary competitors. The nightmare and its rider then kept pace with the faster competitors until there was a distinct gap between those in front and the starting line.

"All right," whispered Mainfe into the nightmare's ear. "We should probably slow down know."

Did you just say that you want to slow down? Aren't you always the one telling me to go-

"Yeah, yeah," said Mainfe, cutting Metuo off. "Well this race will take a while and it's the middle of the day; you can only do so much when there's sun out."

That is a surprisingly insightful analysis coming from you. replied Metuo, who slowed down from the full gallop it was previously running.

"What do you mean surprisingly?" The nightmare didn't bother to respond to the question.

((@Sniper: Where are you in relation to the canyon?

@Glint: Is that the same sandship that stopped and had the undead slaves pull?))

((@Cryypter: I'm not sure about the canyon, but Mainfe should somewhere be close to Dawn and the other up in the lead.))

The horse was beginning to trudge through the sand under the weight of Johannes's armor, but it still kept on going without a second thought. Breathing heavily, Johannes sighed under the heat, taking a quick chug from his water flask. It was going to be a long journey...

((This thread shall be bumped in order to prevent behind-the-scenes cheating. Because Mainfe and Metuo will attack everyone if not watched carefully.))
