She's talking about people who have an abnormal amount (let's say 50+) of fake referral accounts they leveled up to 10 (5 on the old system) and then promptly abandoned those accounts. Don't get too paranoid.

yeah i wonder if this is aimed at big time abuse involving numbers like this or if riot will work to go after anyone who refers a smurf

basically riot is being intentionally vague on what numbers and what exact scale is required for them to care or feel that action is necessary

and that is a smart decision, i'm a bit paranoid to even refer a single smurf to be honest. curses! thought i could get an easy 300ip whenever i got around to making my 1st smurf account

i'm a bit miffed at maybe losing out on the occasional innocent underhanded freebie but it is worth it if it means we get to see riot cracking down on the scum that set up elaborate systems in order to get 50+ false refferals

Does this mean smufing is now bannable?

If so, how do you suggest I play with my lower levelled friends?

Do you refer yourself as a friend when you smurf?

Summoners!

We recently popped the cork on the second iteration of our Refer-a-Friend Program, so we thought it might be time to have a little chat with those of you intending to take advantage of this system. Exploiting the Refer-a-Friend program is not only unfair to those summoners who make an honest effort to introduce others to League of Legends, but also detrimental to everyone’s overall experience – particularly when the methods employed can potentially ruin honest players’ games.

Consider this fair warning. We’re going to be treating any attempt to exploit the Refer-a-Friend program the same way that we would any other fraud attempt. This means that our ever-vigilant Fraud Prevention Team will be monitoring the system, ready to pounce on perpetrators of nefarious schemes aimed at acquiring dishonest referrals. And once we found them, they’re going to find themselves subject to some pretty hefty consequences, including:

  • The loss of any and all content acquired under dubious circumstances.
  • A permanent ban from the Refer-a-Friend Program.
  • A suspension or in some cases, a permanent ban from League of Legends.

Our commitment to honest players has always been one of our ideals as a company, and the Refer-a-Friend Program is no different. We’re taking this seriously, and we hope that you are, too.

What if we already did this six months ago?

Completely fair, but you guys should get around to post-creation acknowledgement of referral.

Sometimes we forget to send the referral link or spread information by word of mouth, making random characters bothersome to deal with.

EDIT: Additionally, you should look at bumping up the rewards a bit. Before, you would get 600 or so IP from a referral, but now you only get 250 for level 5 referrals and sporadic milestone rewards which taper off in efficiency a bit, ignoring the fact that they require an account to reach level 10.

Given these new anti-fraud mechanisms, surely you can afford to make some changes.

Very well said, I have a friend who's in for a big payday if such a feature were to be implemented. He introduced 8-9 of us :P

What about the upcoming items? "Athene's Unholy Grail"

There has been a petition against him having his name on the item and the thread had like ~500 upvotes.
There was a lot of talk about smurfing there.

Can you say something to that?

Grandfather clause. Sorry.

I guess what she means is you can only Refer-a-Friend on one account. I don't think this is too big of a request, I'm only guessing though. You don't have to refer your friends either, you only get the prizes right? they don't really get anything for using your invitation do they?
