Does anyone know the order in which the damage applied to him is done? does he take the reduced damage from his resistances, and then his ult, or vice versa? or is the effect just additive, where all the resistances get lumped together and applied?

The answer is that it doesn't matter.

1000dmg * (.5)armor/magicresist = 500 * (.1)ulty = 50dmg

1000dmg * (.1)ulty = 100 *(.5)armor/magic resist = 50dmg

This. The order doesn't matter in multiplication and division.

hrmmm, You know, I thought I had a reason for posting this when I did, but now I can't think of it. Thank you for the answer anyway guys ^_^ hopefully I'll remember.

Ultimately this means purchasing Resistances on Alistar is better since he has a high HP growth right?

You should still purchase an all-around build and not focus on any single defensive stat unless the enemies decided to stack one damage type. Shurelya's, Zeke's, Randuin's/Solari, BV all give great stats while not being far from what a support should normally get.

Oh my normal build for Alistar, was as follows:

Pendant+2 greens+1 pink
Philo stone +2 green +1pink
Boots+Kindelgem+Oracles+1 green or 2 greens+ 1 pink
Super speed boots + 2 greens + oracles or cloth armor/null-magic mantle
Aegis + 2-3 greens
Shurelia's + 2-3 greens

and from there I was building more health, I'm thinking I should focus more on resistances at that point though.

Wards and pots are always situational, so you should never have a set amount of wards or pots you buy. You need to include a HoG because of the GP10 and the items it can build into. Tabi, Merc, and Ionian should also be given consideration because no two games are the same.
