So I read the forums quite a lot, and currently the only meta that sticks in Dominion is a good bot lane. But I almost never hear talk about the Windmill struggle,or what champs would be good fighting for top. IMO, a good team for top would be champs that have a big team presence (Karma, Amumu, GP, Leona), and good bruisers that can soften up the enemy team for the carries/assassins (Mundo, Nasus, Nunu, Trundle).

Team presence is not quite as important as sustain or burst.

Mobility, strong poke, the ability to dive a turret, burst damage, creep pushing ability, disruption.

Generally the bruisers aren't for softening up the enemy, that is done with poking. Bruisers are their to dive the turret and take the turret hits. And team presence is always good, but the amount of time that any one champ is with any specific number or member of his own team is pretty limited, so the ability to work solo or with any other champ is better than team presence.

Burst is necessary because it's only a matter of time before more enemy champs are coming up out of the FoW. You need to get those champs down and that point flipped.

Creep pushing works both ways, either you are pushing creeps toward a defended turret, or quickly eliminating the wave that is being sent at your turret.

Mobility is important for all of Dom. Because it's not Windmill you need to control, it's the jungle. Which includes both mid points and Windmill, as well as the ability to gank bot.

Disruption screws with everyone elses abilities and advantages.

Are you talking about top in general or top initially?

Windmill is usually decided by whoever initiates poorly first. Some characters, like Blitz or Ahri, can basically force the equivalent of a bad initiate, so they're good for windmill. Windmill is poke until the battle starts, then burst to see who wins and is better at focusing.

For top in general, whoever reacts best to what's happening in the map wins. If you get a deadly combo to hold top, who cares? The enemy takes your mid and ignores you, while the rest of the map has only 3 of your teammates. Dominion is about luring the enemy into bad fights. If you can lure them to attack you on your node, you win. If they can lure you into the jungle, they win. If they can lure you into defending their mid or bot, then they can kill you and not only take back their point but usually get a third. Whoever can split the other team and make them fight battles they shouldn't tends to win.

You need to hold 3 points to win, but standing on the points in the open just lets the enemies see where you are and mass to take your weakest point.
