I'm pretty much a complete noob to LoL, so it should be expected that I would ask something like this.... does armor also reduce magic damage?

Armor does not reduce magic damage. Only Magic Resist does, and in a similar fashion to Armor. If you have 100 armor, you can take 100% more physical damage than if you had zero armor. Similarly, if you have 100 magic resist, you can take 100% more magical damage than if you had zero magic resist. Some champions have abilities that will reduce magical damage done to them/allies, but overall magic resist is about the only way.

There are also spell shields, like the one on Morgana, which completely negates magic damage... though it should be noted that all champs can do physical damage, but not all of them do a lot... so depending on the opposing team's composition armor is a better option than magic resist. Though against others magic resist might be better...
