If you are going to do a ranked game at level 30, or any kind of game at all:

KNOW HOW TO PLAY AT LEAST 1 TANK.

I will say it again.

YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY AT LEAST 1 TANK. PERIOD.
I can't tell you how many people I play with say:
"I don't play tanks"
"Tanks are boring"
"u play tank nub"
"I only play Shaco/Jax/Ashe/Teemo"

Please.
Play a tank. If you don't, you're ruining games.

My friend keeps telling me the best advice I gave him, when he was new, was "Just Don't Die"
It may seem obvious and silly, but learning to watch you positioning and knowing when a gank is coming and how to move your character is something people just think everyone gets. Learn how not to die is #1 skill. Ganking, pushing, timing all come with practice. Not dieing is just a natural way of moving around with any champ.

Generally you should be able to play one or two champions of every category. Tanks, dps, casters, support.

What if you don't have the runes for a tank?

tanks dont need the runes as much as other heroes, everyone serious about this game buys HP quints and thats about all you need, tanks have naturally tankish stats. and yes staying alive is far more important than kills in the laning phase, the early game can break or make the game.
