do you give him any AP items? his spells have some of the best ratios in the game (heck his ult DOES have the best AP ratio in the game). I am always torn between making him a support tank or a support caster as he can do very well in both situations. If you can actually pull off a full channel ult with 200 or more AP you can quite easily get pentakills if used right. and spaming 500+ damage ice bolts every 3 seconds to harrass an enemy who doesnt want to engage will drive them nuts, not to mention his chasing/escaping abilities.

on the other hand if you go full AP you will always be the first target of the other team and you'll probably not live long enough to pull off your ult lol.

There a few issues that I have with AP nunu.

First off, he doesn't really do that much damage. If you look at other casters and then compare it to Nunu's damage, you'll see how much less it really is.

Secondly, he doesn't do that much damage because come later in the game (When AP shines on majority of heroes) he's getting pulled out of his ult near instantly and then, as an AP Nunu, dies very quickly.

Thirdly. AP is a late game strength, thus gimping Nunu's amazing early game.

Take a look at say, Banshee's veil.

Grants 450 Health, 400 Mana, and 57 Magic Resist. Passive Unique Passive: Blocks one negative spell every 30 seconds

All of that for 2715 gold, which is easy to acquire in early game, ontop of (early game-wise) a huge amount of health and mana, sizable MR, and every skirmish he blocks a spell (Banshee's shines in small fights.) It gives you the ability to run in and fully utilize that powerful ult.

AP, the alternative to Banshee's veil (Cost wise) would be abyssal scepter.

+70 AP. +57 Magic Resistance, UNIQUE Aura: Reduces the Magic Resist of nearby enemy champions by 20. 2650 Gold.

Look at all the bonuses Banshee's veil gives. With Abyssal, you're essentially paying the same amount of gold for your snowball to do +70 damage (About Nunu's early game AD) and +175 damage on your ultimate. Let's pretend that neither of these items gives MR.

Would you rather pay 2.6k for +245 damage in your initial burst (Assuming your ult isn't stunned through) ontop of an extra attack every snowball (essentially), or would you rather pay 2.6k for 450 HP, 400 Mana, and a blocked spell every 30 seconds.

Regarding AP nunu as a whole, there are other characters that do AP nunu a lot better then he could ever hope. (Any AoE nuker) People see the big number and think it's amazing when in actuality as a whole, a true nuker like Anivia or Ryze will outdo you every time, at a much persistent level.

Abyssal scepter basically gives your whole team 20 magic pen though. Banshees is still far better .

What about a mejais after catalyst? And maybe sorc boots? I was thinking (optional)doran ring/catalyst/boots/mejais/sorc boots/banshees/guardian angel or something.
