I'm just theory crafing but

-Outranges every other common pick by miles letting her easily harass and zone them out
-Will rarely take damage, has very little need for mana
-Rocket jump protects her from ganks.

Start with a vamp scepter and rush wiggles. Than go with standard build.

teleport+flash: Flash is standard teleport for split pushing, extra sustain and being able to buy wiggles the moment you reach enough gold

standard runes and masteries

Solo Top is dominated by Tanky DPS. There is a reason for this. You can't put a tanky DPS at bot lane. It will be very hard to avoid getting harassed and kited out of lane. You can't put very many tanky DPS's at mid, because you might just end up fighting a Vlad, or a Xerath, etc.

So that generally leaves the jungle and top lane. If you think about it...in order to have Trist Top work in a team comp, you would need:

Tristana Top (As noted)
AD Carry + Support @ Bot Lane (because you'll need someone to go up against the enemy AD carry and be able to farm in that lane)
Tank Jungler (because so far, you're going to be very very squishy)
Tanky AP mid

Which in the end, does not work out. If the Tanky AP builds tank (like he will need to) then you'll have little to no AP damage output from your team. If he builds straight glass cannon AP, well now you have 4 glass cannons and one tank. As long as the enemy team just focuses all of the glass cannons, you'll instantly lose basically every fight.

Basically what it comes down to is you need tanky DPS. And solo top just happens to be the perfect lane for that, since it is quite hard to fit a tanky DPS at mid or bot lane (most of the time).

Rocket Jump is unreliable protection against ganks because it has a windup time, and you can still get dropped in midair.
There's a few problems with Trist top:
1. If the enemy can close in on her, Trist loses the exchange big time. And lots of champions have gap closers (eg. Irelia, Renekton).
2. Trist's big burst damage ability is also her escape, unlike someone like Corki. So she can't punish people as hard for attempting to close and failing.
3. Trist's range isn't that great at the start
4. Like all the other ranged AD carries, she's slow as heck. In a long lane, that's freaking scary any time you're past the halfway point.
5. You can still get CCed in the middle of Rocket Jump
6. Trist is squishy as heck, which combined with 4 and 5 can easily get you killed a lot.

play ryze or morg mid problem solved

it mostly won't work because she's too squishy. It can work sometimes though. Ranged ad can counter a lot of melee.
