Here is a list of champions I own.

Allistar
Kassadin
Kayle
Lee Sin
Maokai
Mordekaiser
Poppy
Sion
Tristana
Udyr

Which ones are viable ranked game picks? And what roles would you play them as?

Alistar - bot support (awesome with a ranged AD carry)
Kassadin - AP mid, usually
Kayle - Don't see her much in mid. Would be solo top if you did play her, probably
Lee Sin - Jungle, usually, solo top maybe
Maokai - Jungle, usually
Morde - don't see much in ranked, Solo top or mid if you do play him
Poppy - not a typical ranked pick right now; useful perhaps as a counterpick or to throw off the current meta game, but you'd have to know exactly what you're doing
Sion - Pretty versatile. I've seen good Sion's as AP mid, or solo top
Tristana - AD carry bot, probably
Udyr - Jungle

If you get matched against a bottom with no flat heal, Mao support bot is a nice choice. Your long range Sapling Toss can keep the enemy carry from getting a few minions a wave, but it can be a double edged sword, so you have to be careful. It's also nice if their support is sitting in the brush.

The only other problem is that without kills, or assists, you're going to be underfarmed, which makes your initiation harder to pull off without dieing. But if your top and jungle have picked solid tanky champs, that may not be a concern, just Twisting Advance the straggler and watch them die from your carries.

Nothing wrong with solo top Maokai, I do it all the time. Can't compete against champions and Udyr and Riven, but can push hard and keep the farm even, beats Yorick with that burst, gets slowly dominated by Cho'Gath, stomps Talon (who doesn't?), gets pooped on by Wukong, Irelia and Galio... destroys Nasus... but the main benefit is that, with a Maokai, jungle ganks basically guarantee a kill.

Maokai mid is also a rarely played counterpick. Stomps champions like Cassiopeia and Karthus for obvious reasons, but anyone who needs to get within 650 range of him to do things (harass, CS, whatever) will die to his burst, and will not be able to burst through his tankiness. Beaten by the normal anti-melee mages, that is, Swain and Kennen.

Kayle is really good on top, especially when enemy champion tanks aren't present. Kayle is better at cleaning out minions and towers with her "e" ability. If you play mid with her, set her up behind a tank as a support character.
