the only guide ive found is for jungling.. I dont do that so Im just curious how others play yi?

mainly what items?

I usually start with a potion/dagger to build my boots, then build phantom dancer, then infinity edge, then go for starks or bloodthirster. The game usually ends around here if not a little sooner.

My runes are Red= armor pen, Quints Armor pen, yellow is dodge, and blue is cooldown per level.

Opinions on runes and item builds?

What do you do and why! im trying to improve my Yi gameplay, my main problem with him is hes a bit squishy.

Use clarity for blue, it saves you the money of regen items, lets yous spam alpha strike, and also gives more chances to rampage (meaning you maintain mana for your ult)

You don't need philosopher's stone.

I usually go:
Early: Emblem of Valour/ Berserker's Greaves/ Phage/ Zeal
Middle: Atma's Impaler/ Madred's Bloodrazor
Late: Phantom Dancer/ Infinity Edge/ Frozen Mallet/ Starks Fervor

If you can manage to get 2 kills by level 5 (realistic if you go exhaust/flash and play mindgames as well as solo) and you keep up the momentum by routinely going dragon -> snare buff -> ganking, you can have most of those items.

Skills and Masteries are self explanatory.

Yi is definitely my main hero. I don't remember the last time I've ever had a negative k/d.

Masteries
21/0/9

Runes
Red = Armor Pen (Desolation)
Yellow = Crit Dmg (Furor)
Blue = Crit Dmg (Furor)
Quintessance = Armor Pen (Desolation)

Spells

Imp. Exhaust
Imp. Teleport

Item

**Usually use elixirs for ganks / pushing towers**

-Meki pendant
-Philo stone
-Berserker's Greaves
-Last Whisper
-Stark's Fervor (Tanks) / Bloodthirster (Physical dps) or Banshee's Veil (Casters)
-Luxury Item (Infinity Edge, Black Cleaver... anything that adds dmg)

Skills
Alpha Strike > Wuju Style (until 6)
Highlander > Wuju Style > Alpha Strike (after 6)

I rely on my team for slows, or exhaust. I rarely engage from the front. I always use weeds, or come from behind. I've been consistent with the items I get up to Last Whisper. Past that, it's usually a judgement call.

I believe Yi is a hero that benefits a lot more from Atk Speed / Armor Pen items. Also, armor pen really wrecks people early / mid game. Crit dmg doesn't really help because you don't have the crit items until much later. Phantom Dancer is a huge waste on Yi imo.

Masteries
21/0/9

Runes
Red = Armor Pen (Desolation)
Yellow = Dodge (Evasion)
Blue = Doesn't matter imho.
Quintessance = Armor Pen (Desolation)

Spells
Flash
Teleport

Item
-17.5 Life Regen Pendant thing.
-Berserker's Greaves
-Madrid's Razors

Rest depends on game. Tend to sell Pendant mid game.

-Last Whisper
-Stark's Fervor
-Infinity Edge
-Black Cleaver
-Phage
Etc... just to name a few.

Elixirs are nice if you got a good cash flow. But I have done without depending on game states.

I been changing how I play Yi a lot to be more unique of a Yi player. So I can't help you any further. Skills vastly depend on how the game is looking. Sometimes I get Wuju over Alpha. Vice versa.

But so far my adapting Yi to game states has been greatly effecting the outcome of games. I am not talking items but laning choices. I think it is important for Yi to lane properly early game. Mid/Late game is depending on how the rest of the team is.

Runes: everything on attack speed
Masteries: 21/0/9
spells: flash (oh oh he is getting away... *bam* flash *... got slain*) and exhaust, so they cant run away from you
Items:
Regrowth Pendant -> Philosophers stone
Attack speed boots (dunno the name)
Infinity edge (bf sword -> pick axe)
Starks farvor
Phantom dancer

after that the game is usualy already finished but if not... black cleaver or frozen mallet or if they have many tanks, last whisper (40% armor penetration ftw)

Skills:
Alpha strike -> Wuju style -> Alpha -> Wuju -> .... -> high lander -> alpha -> wuju -> (at lvl 13) meditation -> and so on

Alpha strike is key for farming
wuju + highlander is key for killing

Playstyle:
Early: Harass as much as you can (you dont have enough attack dmg to do anything anyway...)
Mid: Gank/Push (after the infinity edge you are free to kill everyone)
Late: walk on the map as a godlike creature (1vs5 is possible to win, i did)

Youll die a lot with that build, if the others have many stuns... but in a 1 on 1 or even 1 on 3 or more you will win... i usually kill 3 or 4 of them before the last one kills me
At the end i have
1991 max hp (without frozen mallet, with it about 2700)
66% crit
1.98 (or something like that) attack speed (with ulti i come to the cap of 2.5)
425 movement speed
and 200-270 attack dmg (depends on the 6th item)

every crit attack is dealing 600 or even more dmg
possible dmg output is about 2.4k dmg in 1 sec
with that dmg u dont need any health or armor

I build my Phage first. Getting the extra 200hp really helps you get kills in early laning when people are surprised they can't burst you down. Tanks exchanging slugs with you only to find they're slipping.

With meditate it really lets you stay in the lane all day.

I find I can't really get as many kills as I would like without some kind of slowing (unless you rely on lizard buff)
