Do good players use a lot of elixers?

I haven't really paid much attention to elixers in the past, but I was just looking at them, and it seems like they're not that expensive and they have a fairly decent benefit. If I kept myself all 'lixered up throughout the game, it would cost me nine hundred gold every four minutes. IME, a 3v3 game generally takes fifteen minutes or so (really guesstimating here admittedly) so that'd cost me around 3000 gold or so. How do the benefits of drinking all elixers compare to the benefits of some other items that cost a total of 3000 gold or so?

Some people start with a fort elixir or briliance elixir to try and get first blood. It's best to use elixirs when you have the extra gold and you're sure it won't go to waste. Yes, pro's use them all the time, but it's all about knowing when to use them. If you're about to hardcore push a tower, it wouldn't hurt to grab a red/green pot. You'll learn when the more you play. Knowing when to pop them is another huge thing.

Elixirs are incredible items. They give you a very powerful boost at the cost of it being temporary.

Think about it this way.

15% (it's not 20) Critical Strike is 15% chance to double your attack damage, so you can think of that as 7.5% extra damage. More if you have Infinity Edge. Tack on the 20-35% attack speed, and Elixir of Agility is pretty strong. Of course, this is most suited to characters who actually auto-attack (Tristana, Yi, Tryn, etc).

Elixir of Fortitude is a little weaker. It, however, adds health and damage. It can be a little more useful, and is best suited to characters who use damage in their abilities (Pantheon, Katarina, Ezreal, Ashe, etc).

Elixir of Brilliance is the elixir for casters, and it provides 10% cooldown reduction and bonus AP. The bonus AP granted it is pretty high at all times. At the start it's equivalent to 1.5 Amplifying Tomes, and later it becomes the equivalent of 3 Amplifying Tomes.

I'm not going to give you a direct comparison in terms of gold, but in short elixirs are very useful in a close game or in a game where you're losing. They can quickly make up the difference between you and an enemy, and more.
