For junglers such as warwick shaco and olaf who dont really need it, would you sacrifice smite for another spell or would you keep it to try jungle faster?

smite is preferable for a jungler, why? flash steal baron, dragon, etc, its not just about faster jungling, even if having say an extra exhaust on the carry might sound good, you generally hope your team has it covered, and go for the variety of summoners

Smite is mandatory for jungling.

You jungle because you want to control buff / dragon / baron/

Any good jungler will smite for a kill and a good jungler will try to steal with smite also.

Ive seen it happen countless times where a jungler will lose a map objective because he mistimed smite or didnt have it at all and the enemy jungler sniped the kill with his smite.

It gives a very defined edge when jungling. You can ignore it in favor of tools you prefer, but the basic gist of the matter is that for a jungler, the edge that smite brings outweighs the possible strengths of any other summoner spell.

smite secures buffs, dragon, and baron. It speeds up your jungle, and for some junglers with spellvamp, can even heal you
yes it is REQUIRED
NOT taking it will get you quite a lot of flame in game, it's non negotiable if you're a jungler.
take it.

If you jungle, you MUST take smite. MUST.

If you jungle and don't take smite, you are a troll or noob.

Explanation: Smite helps you clear the jungle faster, allows therefore for faster ganks and help for the team in general. It helps you make last hits on buffs, dragon and baron which is especially needed in situations of fights over the buffs. Which happen quite often.

If you feel smite is not necessary to jungle, then you are a person who thinks he should sit in jungle till 20 mins in and not do a **** thing for the team just so he doesn't have to get flamed from his team cause you didn't feed since you jungled.

So just as warning.
You jungle without smite = reports => ban.
Leave the jungle to others who can do it if you just want to sit in jungle all game long, *******.

Short Answer: Yes, its needed.

Long answer: Smite's utility is just too useful for what it is you are supposed to do. As stated in other posts, It allows you to clear your jungle quickly, thus letting you gain an edge level wise. Also as stated it helps secure Baron/Dragon much easier and allows for the possible steal should the need arise. If you take the improved smite mastery It also gives you a little extra gold and shorter CD on smite.
The last thing which I find that a lot of people overlook is that smite can be used on things like Tibbers/Yorick's ulti.
So yes, it is a great skill to have, not only early game, but it also applies to mid and end game too.

Riot did not ban a guy because he was "teaching" a jungler a lesson. He completely trolled the game by going smite and running around taking his neutral buffs. He was laning mid and when he saw his own jungler go for a golem or lizard, he would run up and wait until he was able to smite steal it and just do that. It obviously was infuriating to the jungler and raged on the forums and reported him after the game, but riot did nothing i do believe.
