Why I love playing LoL (and Riot is awesome)

I've been putting some time into this game over the past couple months. I just passed around 300 games played and hit 30 last week. I didn't play in beta and I'm not a recent DotA player. But I sort of had a moment getting stomped in a 3v5 today why, even as frustrating as the game can be at times, I still keep coming back for more enjoyment/abuse.

I was really into Blizzard games. I loved Starcraft and I got WCIII and Frozen Throne on the day they came out. Unfortunately, like so many fast paced video games, I never could get over a certain hump of skill. In both games, I eventually turned to play some use map settings games. One that I saw popping up somewhat frequently in Frozen Throne was DotA: Allstars. Sounded interesting. I joined a few games, downloaded the map, (That should give you an idea of how old this memory is), and got in the game. I didn't really know what was going on, but it looked like I had one building where I could pick out around 9 or so heroes that were sort of reworked units and heroes from Frozen Throne. I decided to go with the one who looked like a Big Blue water elemental. I'm from California, I surf, why not?

Back then, few people really knew what was going on. I'm sure it was possible to deny creeps and towers, but I never saw anyone intentionally do it. Sometimes it would go the standard 2/1/2 for lanes, but I played plenty of games where 3 went bottom or mid or whatever. All we really knew was that one team had to get from one side of the map to the other and kill that big building in the middle. Even though I would bravely fight with my big blue water elemental, I always hoped that a Warden would blink in and carry us to victory.

There were few resources on what to do or where to even find the newest maps. New versions came out, but I could only tell when I saw bigger version numbers start to appear. I came on to discover that now we could get champions out of two buildings. I noticed that items started to have recipes, though it was hard to figure out what made what. Even with all that confusion, I kept coming back for more. It was just fun being a hero on a team and going back and forth trying to get into their base. I grew to love the big blue elemental and hate anyone who picked that Dark Elf with the ice arrows. Some things never change...

Eventually I moved on. I had completely stopped playing normal Frozen Throne and I moved on to newer games.

Years later, I'm cruising around Big Download and I see an update about a game called League of Legends. Well, its free to play, and I'm broke, and I'm looking for something new outside of going through dragon age a 3rd time. Lets see what this is. I download, I play the tutorial, and instantly I'm smiling. I know what this is. Its not exactly the same, but I like it. Its better. Its a lot of fun. I started looking at the heroes. Wow, that chogath fellow kind of reminds me of the big rhino beetle guy, except he looks way more awesome. Sivir's boomerang kind of seems like this lightening guy, razor or something, main attack. Wait, who is that mid? Is that the **** Dark Elf again?! Well, at least I know what to look out for.

Later, I went back and tried to watch some DotA played as it stands today. Honestly, I had no idea what was going on, and this is after playing LoL. It was so foreign to what I had grown up with. Sure, it was the same interface but everything about it reminded me of all the confusion I didn't like with none of the simple fun I did enjoy.

To me, LoL has everything I always liked about DotA as a kid without the confusion. I don't need to know all the recipes to make an item, it tells me. I didn't have to search through pages and pages of google before I could find out what some random guy recommended to buy for my water elemental, it gave me some fairly good advice (better now). Things like damage, armor, ability power, I get that. I can make sense of that. And it tells me instantly what these things mean. Simplicity is a blessing for me. I'm never going to play the old or new dota again (I can't even find my old wciii cd's) because I could never go back to such a confusing experience when everything I loved about DotA Allstars as I remember it is right here.

And LoL has a pretty good group of people playing it. It has a certain hardcore element, and some of the more retentive tryhard people have made their way from the modern DotA scene over here, but I've also met plenty of people who just want to have a good time being an awesome hero with a team trying to smash someones base. Once season 1 comes out, I know the normal matches will get more "normal" and if I want a more hardcore experience I can go into ranked play. After a few months of play I've already got around 60 or so people on my friends list and I definitely don't remember making too many friends playing DotA.

Finally, its the concept. It's old, but old in the sense that its classic. Your a hero, a champion now, with a team going off to break down the other sides daunting fortress. Its an awesome thing to be a part of.

Only one thing made me a bit sad. My Big Blue Water Elemental is nowhere to be found. Maybe he was too imba or too weak or maybe he's just been forgotten. And I know one of you dota players are going to say "oh he's so and so n00b l2p" but I can tell you that if he still exists, he's probably nothing like he was when you could only get 9 heroes out of a building. If I could make one suggestion, bring that guy back. Who wouldn't want to play a big blue anthropomorphic puddle?

So anyway, thanks Riot for making something that gives me some major nostalgia and has given me hours of fun. It both takes me way back and gives me something new and fresh. I'm really stoked for everything you have planned. Time to get on with those next 300 games.

It's good to see that there are sane people who realize the pure simple bliss of playing such a fun, addictive FTP game! I agree with all of it, minus the DOTA stuff I never experienced myself :P, have fun with those next 300, I'm currently working on my first.

apparently the blue water elemental is now called Morphling - The Morphling, but I don't really remember him being at all like his description
