Currently i think there is a gap in the items available for AD champions. If you are building AD and you want to get some armor there aren't really any viable options. Atma's impaler is very expensive and only really is worth the cost if your also building health, so for most builds it's not an option.

However if you are AD and you need MR you have wit's end and hex drinker. Both of which are quite good items, and relatively cheep.

There should be an armor AS item or armor AD item to fill the gap.

Atma's Impaler is actually fairly cost-efficient...at some level later, at least, for pretty much ever AD champion. Ashe, for example has around 1700 health at level 18, the combining cost for Atma's is 825 and will give 34 attack damage from that combining cost. In addition to providing armour and critical strike in one slot, it'll give you a damage per 24.26 gold while the B.F. Sword gives you 1 damage per 36.66(and so on) gold. Basically, it's not going to be as awesome while on fighter-type champion, but still not bad at a certain point (sorry, too lazy to figure when it would actually be worth it for Ashe to combine the item).

However, I'd still agree. The armour Atma's Impaler gives is exactly the same as a Chain Vest so the item's defensive benefit on it's own isn't an upgrade, and I'd think AD champions could stand to get more armour than that while also managing to increase their damage output on a single item. There may be some design reason they haven't implemented such thing yet, but I wouldn't know it.

Riot is trying to avoid tanky dps designs.

That's why Hexdrinker is cheap and Atma's is only viable on certain champs. Wit's End is a unique case in that it was originally an anti-mage item.

It's better balance for the game to make you choose between building defense or offense.
Buy the Infinity Edge, or build the Thornmail. Riot doesn't want you having a hybrid of the two.

The only item in the game that provides defense against the type of damage it gives is Abyssal Scepter. 57 MR, 70 AP and 20 MR reduction.

But DPS don't need their own item that does the same or similar, because DPS rely on auto attacks, which have the lowest "cool down" of all skills: their Attack Speed. Casters rely on skills that have cooldowns between 1 and 180 seconds, different amounts of difficulty to aim, and generally being the squishiest class in the game.

if you want you could get an aegis for 78 team armor 114 team MR and 40 team damage, it might not seem worth it but those stats really help in early-mid game team fights

Man, there are 3 AD & armor items: Wriggle's Lantern, Madred's Bloodrazor, and Atma's Impaler. 4 if you count Aegis of the Legion. Take your pick.
