He works well. If you're wiling to go extremely squishy (ie you have a good tank), build Nashor->gunblade and rock some faces. Be sure to grab some extra mana along the way (screw mp5. You hit hard, you hit fast--that's how you regain mana).
Having a stun, slow, and essentially 4 on demand heal (spell vamp also works with active item and spells last time I used it. Not sure if it still does), and an HoT that doubles up as a BFS can go a really long way.

Well, taric can heal himself, has free armor, and can stun fleeing opponents, I think he could DPS, and would do fine against some, but of course ones with significant stat bonus, like nocturne or twitch would have the upper hand.

I do it everytime Taric is free, but I still focus on support somewhat. Grabbing aegis or stark's can still help you dps while still supporting your team. Nashor's is good because it gives you everything you need for the most part and since Taric has one of the highest amounts of base ad in the entire game (yes you read right) and his ultimate gives him free ad it's an excellent item. Level shatter first so you have more time to actually build defense yourself and the armor reduction. Also, try to wait until your enemy has low health or you're confident you won't be focused when you activate shatter.

You forgot he has a natural armor reduc from shatter.

AD bruiser Taric is baws.
Basically build him with a Frozen Mallet and Items that provide cooldown reduction with attack speed and/or damage work well on him.

Think about it... a Zephyrs provides everything you could possibly need in 1 item except what a frozen mallet provides.

now you attack fast (keeps target in your range from FM)
you attack fast (recovers mana based on passive)
you attack fast (lowers your heal to keep you in the fight)
you attack fast (deal whatever damage you will deal fairly quickly)
you have some damage (he naturally has pretty decent damage and his ult adds more)
you have tenacity
you have cooldown reduction (to allow all skills particually your shatter for the armor reduction and your ult providing both survivability for your heal AND damage from your shatter *and stun*)
then you have frozen mallet for HP, damage and the #1 reason you have stickyness.

after that you can mix and match what you need... more AS and CDR (make him supportive too while going dps by geetting a Zeke's adding everything you need)
then you could get a wit's end for the AS and some MR to survive those AP bursters and since you already have armor and now HP too you should be plenty tanky enough to get in crush face and get out.
for boots since you now dont need tenacity you get berserkers and Enchantment: Furor

SO here we go:
Build (not necessarily in order)

Berserker Boots with Enchantment: Furor
Wit's End
Frozen Mallet
Zephyr
Zeke's Herald
Black Cleaver

As for runes you could get the standard armor seals, MR glyphs, i would get MS quints and attack speed marks.

You should have enough protection/HP to survive whatever comes your way, Attack speed to get off your damage as well as keep your mana pool comfortable and your heal on low cooldown, CDR to use your spells often enough and pair up with your AS for your heal, fair boost to damage coupled with your Ult, Shatter and BC for armor pen should make up for not stacking damage, on attack slow and your stun and Zephyr's for extra MS along with the Quints should allow for a very nice balanced off tank/bruiser kit.
