AoE's still active during Zhonya's Hourglass

I played a match earlier today where Karthas would use Defile, then Zhonya's Hourglass to protect himself while he'd burn my team. I've heard of similar play with Fiddlesticks' Crowstorm and Kennen's Silencing Maelstrom. While the effect should "prevent them from taking any action," the aura stays active.

Is this an intended interaction, or exploitation of a bug?

It's intended.

If you couldn't do this, the only point of it would be against a Fiddlesticks or a Kennen... and that's just limited.

The reason being is that these abilities are delayed after activation but not actually channeled. After they're activated they will go off shortly thereafter, no matter what the champ does in the meantime, including the hourglass active. A channel will get interrupted by it.

Zhonya's will interrupt skills that make a channel bar after you start them, it will not stop skills that have ongoing non-channeled effects. Just because Heimerdinger uses Zhonya doesn't mean his missiles stop mid-flight or his turrets quit shooting. It's an intended way for the item to work on the few non-channeled skills. It also works with Anivia's Ult. :3

its no different than if you were to stun those champions either. zhonya's hour glass is technically a stun with an immunity shield.

plus why would you stay in the zone where the enemy has something like that going on anyways? if they're stunned then they cant move, meanning you should have an easier time to get out of there

Its a mage's responce to a xin diving on them.

ie Xin dives on heimer. Heimer activates ulti and hourglasses out, hoping for teamates to rescue him while his turrets wail away.

If there is, at any time during your spell/ultimate, a cast bar on your screen, Hourglass will interrupt the effect. So Zhonya's will interrupt Kat's ulti and Nunu's ulti for example (since they are channeled) but will not cancel Kennan or Mogana's ulti (since they are not).

Fiddles has two phases to his ulti - the initial channel and the actual crowstorm. If he hourglass's while channeling, it will be canceled. If he hourglasses while CAWCAWCAW'ing, his spell will continue.

Case in point - Karthus's defile is a toggle, not a channel.
