I'm working on a tank Pirate build that uses Atma's and Frost Mallet.

This is what I have so far.

Cleaver was a kind of spur of the moment buy, because I came back to the fountain with a particularly large amount of cash. Replace that with Infinity Edge, I think. After that, I pretty much have a build on my hands.

What do you guys do when you want something other then plain-jane Critplank? What summoner spells would you recommend for what I'm doing?

Rylai's!!! Makes his entire ult area slow people!!!
For your build, I'd get exhaust since he lacks any form of CC other than his ult. For the second one I can't think of any essentials, and would probably just get fortify or something.

Sunfire works well for superpushing and just generally being a presence in melee.

If you are going Rylais, wouldn't Brutalizer be a good item? Better damage, and reduced cooldowns?

I've been told that gangplank works pretty well as a tank, but I don't understand how that can be. Does he have a passive I'm forgeting about that allows him to be powerful by stacking defense?

The GangTank relies on 3 different things.
1) Lifesteal (from the 1000 damage parrrley to heal 200hp every 6 seconds)
2) Armor items such as the Frozen Heart (which also reduces enemy attack speeds 25%)
3) Dodge

Such that his end build gives him a total of
178 armor
36% dodge
25% reduced enemy attack speed
2647 HP

which adds up to well over 15,000 effective hp while still maintaining good damage output and a lot of lifesteal. (Not including masteries and runes)

Most champions can do the same item build, (2xphantom, infinity edge, frozen mallet, frozen heart, bloodseeker) but Gangplank happens to farm very well and he benefits the most from those items due to Parrrley gaining bonuses from those "defensive" items.


UPDATE: LOLZERS! I just finished checking out both builds with Leaguecraft

I thought about Sunfires, but I went with Warmog's instead to buff the power of Atma's.

Also, the problem with Brutalizer is it doesn't effect magic damage, thus does not stack with with Pirate's Q, so I kinda threw that out.

Also, I'm not sure about Rylai's, I really don't feel as though I'd get the full benefit from it.

Does anybody know how his Q behaves with both Frost Mallet and Rylai's?

It's more of a damage/tank hybrid. Gangplank makes a good tank in the sense that he can out-farm your typical straight bar tank, thus get the items faster, thus make up for what he lacks in tanking abilities in income.

I see him as a platform that you can safely push lanes and take towers, escape from hairy situations with his ultra-clense-heal-remove-scurvy, and also be a huge benefit in team fights.

Plus, you don't need Phantom Dancer to get kills with Gangplank, I'd much rather put that money into HP which then benefits my Atma's.

that may be so, but i notice that you have no boots... which is a more than controversial choice, if you took boots out of my build it would be a bigger DPS boost (but i guess with 2 PD's and raise morale you probably still move at a respectable speed?)

i'm not sure if it's counting parley damage (i'm assuming yes by the numbers)

take away the boots, add last whisper

my build is now 300 DPS ahead (20% more overall) for a measly 60 armor and some dodge... and i would do more and more DPS than you would vs armored targets =P


interesting idea, but 2 phantom dancers is just never really that great of an idea IMHO

Oh no, you misunderstand my intent.

1) my build is based on your build.
2) I was merely defending the position that Gangplank was indeed viable to move into tank territory without making too much sacrifice, which I believe I made an excellent case for, considering effective HP without sacrificing too much DPS. I got SOOOO many insults on my guide for suggesting a Gangtank.
3) It doesn't sacrifice parrrley either, which adds 872 per hit every 4.5 seconds (193 magic dps) as opposed to 994 per hit every 6 seconds (165 magic dps).


And you are correct, 3k gold is a great deal of money but my build is a copy of yours up until late game anyway. We basically only disagree on 2 end-game items, and perhaps the usefulness of cannon barrage.


And the leaguecraft builder doesnt count skill damage and skill bonuses. So your true attack speed is 36% higher (raise morale) and it doesnt count parrrley damage. All I'm saying is that the right defensive item on Gangplank doesn't sacrifice DPS but still gives him effective HP - although it does cost an arm and a leg.

I'm going with

Chalice -> Boots -> Frost Mallet -> Infinity Edge -> Atma's -> Warmogs

I don't see the need for PD as I'm not playing Gangplank for DPS.

Phantom Dancer adds 20% dodge, 12% movespeed. Which is why KFed suggested getting for tanking. The attk speed and crit are just a bonus.

Stacking 2 PD's would only be feasible against an all physical dps team. For a balanced tank build it would prob be better to invest in some HP/MR, like Banshee's for example.
