Hey Riot Chezai,

Thanks for keeping on top of this thread. It has made the job of researching what positions in my field are available at RIOT easier than I expected.

I have been working in the Information Security and Incident Response space for a couple of years now and I would like to specialize in the challenges that companies like RIOT and others in the industry face when it comes to securing all of the fantastic products you offer. Is there anyone I can contact further just to have a discussion around what kind of work you guys are doing and where I might fit in?

Feel free to add me in game and message me.

Hey Zastie,

Unfortunately, I don't know what our plans regarding forum moderation will be in the future. I'll definitely bring this up to members of the appropriate team. Thanks!

Hi, Chezai!

I recently applied for the Player Support Behaviour Specialist role through the Riot website. While I have a decade of service experience working in a fast paced environment (along with other skills and qualifications that compliment the position) and a deep seeded love of video games and the social component (LoL in particular), I lack experience in the gaming industry.

Is passion for video games a good substitute for industry experience when a role appears to be focused on soft-skills rather that technical expertise and loads of related experience?

Any insight into this would be extremely helpful!

I'm not from the US (I'm not even from the Americas).

I want to work on things like... The team builder (front end or backend), champion mechanics (stuff like the kind of changes to make Yasuo's W actually work)... Eh... Working on LoL's website is also a position I'd like to be in...

Any tips about how should apply and to what I should apply? Before I knew this topic existed, I applied for a java developer position. Even though it is something I like a lot, it does not really say what kind of challenges I'm facing (I only have some vague clues).
Also, I'm an aspie (asperger's syndrome).

AFAIK developer is always about logical problem solving, evolving finding the best way to solve problem that shows up ahead... And that's what I really want to do as a living. Having only that into account, am I doing the right way?
Hey brunoais,

We're definitely open to bringing awesome people onboard even if they're outside the US. As you know, java developers are extremely versatile and needed for a variety of projects. If you take a look at the careers page, it will list java engineers under particular groups [Esports, Web Development, Platform Engineering, etc.]. Though all the challenges you'll be faced with aren't listed, the gist of it is there.

If you're passionate about java development, then you've applied to the right position. I'm not sure what your professional experience looks like, but having project and/or work experience is very valuable. You mentioned working on champion mechanics and the website --> those would fall under Gameplay Engineer and Front End Web Developer respectively.

With regards to problem-solving development issues at Riot, we take a collaborative approach to things. This means there's a lot of discussions before the super-heads down programming.

You seem to be very interested in many aspects of development. This being the case, try to figure out what exactly it is you see yourself doing 3 - 5 years down the road [just to help create a roadmap].

Hope this helps!

Edit: Actually see a few more QA posts and have applied to them as well.
Hey Baron Nashar,

There's an FAQ with answers to timeline questions on our LinkedIn group. Best of luck!

I will apply for Technical Game Designer job in this year, knowing that a Thechnical Game Designer is a combination of both Gamplay Engineer and Game Designer (based on the job site description).

I know what math and programming I need to practice, but I know little about Game Design.

What can I study or do to get a better understanding in Game Design? I'm doing side projects (Game Developement).

Thank you for reading and Greetings!

PD: Sorry for my mispelled english (if there are mistakes).
Hey Zephilwroxt,

To my knowledge, Technical Game Designers have to have a solid computer science background as well as design insights. With regards to what you should study, that's something I'm not too familiar with. The best people to catch on the forums to help you with this would probably be CertainlyT, Riot Exgeniar, Xypherous, and Brackhar. Best in the sense that they're the ones I'm familiar with xD

Best of luck!

Hey Effram,

Passion and transferable skills are important regardless of industry experience. However, it really depends on what that team's looking for. The Player Support Behaviour Specialist role appears to be a very soft-skills focused role, but at the same time not all soft-skills/transferable skills are made equal. Having come from a service industry background, I have established that that alone might not qualify me for this particular position. It's definitely worth a shot!
