Hey GD, I'm thinking of switching from console to PC (#PCMasterRace ) but unfortunately I've not a clue of what I'm doing.
Unfortunately, it seems that I'm incapable of useful Google search. No matter what I look up, I can't find what to do. Also, if possible, I would like to be able to play games like BF4 and CoD and run them relatively quick (does not need to be maxed settings by the way)
OK, some quick questions.
Q1: First off, I'm wondering is it worth it to even get a laptop? If I did, I could move my budget up to around $900 or $950, simply because I won't need to purchase a keyboard or monitor, just a mouse and maybe speakers. I know laptops are generally more expensive than desktops, but a laptop would be way easier, for school, portability, and I honestly don't know where I would put a desktop in my house.
Q2: If a desktop, can someone give me a computer to buy, or a build? Same goes for a laptop, if that is what you would recommend.
Final Question Q3: What version of Windows?
Thanks guys, help is appreciated
Edit Quick answers, thanks guys
Edit 2 Holy **** Riot :O Thanks morg
Edit 3 ur mum omg owned!!!!!111!!!!!oneone!!!!!eleven!!!11

**** a ****ing laptop.

Get a desktop especially if you're on a budget.

Edit : Also, the best way to save money when getting a computer is to build it yourself by buying the components.

Get a laptop if you need mobility, otherwise get a desktop. However, laptops are very useful overall so that might be the better avenue.

**** Windows 8.

Ignore the two fools, Windows 8/8.1 boots blazing fast even without a SSD. That alone is worth getting it.

You can disable booting to the Start screen and essentially never have to bother with it.

Q1) That is very dependent. What are you going to be doing in school? For example, I have many presentations I have to do, so buying a laptop was the best option for me. Look at what courses you will need to take and decide if you need the mobility of a laptop, however do note that a gaming laptop will be bulkier than non-gaming and ultrabooks. Desktops will give you a better performance for price, but come at a loss of portability.

Q2) It'd take me some time to build a laptop/desktop for you, and I have class in like 10 min; but building one yourself is easy and cheap for desktops unless you can get an amazing sale; as for laptops I have a sager and it is amazing. Asus and hp can be decent as well.

Q3) Windows 8 long story short runs better. People just don't seem to like chance, even when they ask for it. I've noticed a faster boot with the same rpm hdd, plus all the tweaks feel better. It's not hard to get used to it.

Hope that helped!

Depending on how drained I am after classes tonight I might could make you some mock builds

Well, you have to consider the monitor too for a desktop. However, for around 600 USD you can get something like this...

Intel i5-3500K (3.4Ghz Quad Core)
16 Gigs DDR3 ram
nVidia 6xx series GPU (150-200+ depending on model/brand)
650+ Watt power supply
Asus motherboard most likely. (personal preference)

If you have a good monitor, that's a hundred saved as well. What I built for near 800 was this:

ASUS P8Z77-V Motherboard: On sale, $110
Intel i5-3570K 3.4Ghz Quad Core running at 4.5Ghz: $180 on sale, 220 if not.
16 Gigs Corsair DDR3 Ram (2 Dual Channel 8gig sticks, $100 on sale)
EVGA FTW+ 670 (4 Gig nVidia 670 Overclocked) ($400)
Liquid Cooled CPU cooler (Forget the model name off the top of my head, was $50)

I already owned a 650W power supply ($55) and a 4 year old 1080p monitor ($130) and a 120g SSD ($80 on Newegg special) and a 2 Terabyte HHD (Sata3, $100).

All and all, ignoring the parts I already had, $840. Knock the GPU into reasonable price range (down 200) and something close should be around ~$600-$650
