Chess is competitive, too, and what's the most complex thing in it? Well, leaving out Castling, the Knight is the most "complicated" unit. So why has it endured for thousands of years?

Chess is proof that a strategy intensive game can lack complexity and still be appealing and full of depth.

Reason i don't play MMO's anymore, a small gear discrepancy can easily **** over the player like this in multiple instances. This makes losing a bitter experience rather then a learning one like in LoL because instead of thinking "That guy outplayed me" your thinking "This sucks, he has 1 tier higher then me in gear and he basically gets a free kill because of it".

Its kind of sad that the first 3 points all have to do with a player not wanting to bother learning the game. Hopefully we can grow games to the sophistication where players enjoy learning the game and really "owning" it as a hobby. Some players prefer a more strategic, less micro intensive approach to gameplay and like champions with passives and auras. Who cares if less thoughtful players underrate the auras? Sounds silly, just educate.

Actually, I finished reading this, and most of the anti patterns are just based on "we don't want to offend the ignorant player". The good points have to do with anti-fun. The rest while they can be frustrating, you can also just educate and open up more options in the game, rather than making a game geared only for bad players. What if in baseball some noobs didn't know sacrafice bunting could ever be a good idea? Do you make it so that all base runners get an extra base on top of what they earn on the play? No, we take it out of the game. Wait, what? Why not just educate on when its good or bad?
