Sure, but it fits better than the example I was referring to. Also, unless someone is willing to sell his Ferrari, the situation is the same. And usually no one will sell it

It could be seen as ethically/morally binding, but I'm pretty sure it's not legally binding.
Well, I'm sure one could come up with all sorts of excuses. But a policy change doesn't excuse anything from a legal point of view, because the second party in a contract doesn't care at all about your internal policies.

I can only repeat: I'm not an US-lawyer, so you might have strange laws over there, but in almost any state in the EU this was and is a legally binding contract. And since Riot is operating in the EU, they have to respect EU trade law as well. In Germany for example ANY mutually concluded contract, even if only vocalized, is legally binding. Issues may revolve around proving the contract actually was concluded, but this isn't even remotely in question here.

You can of course break any contract if you are ready to accept the consequences, which from a legal point of view might be very small (worst case courts in the EU would require Riot to redeem the money to customers).

Now that this thread has been somewhat derailed (my fault for raising a highly controversial topic), I will make one last post and will then restart the conversations and take more questions in new threads when the time is right.

Here is my current plan regarding the major topics discussed in this thread:

  • Refunds – will be addressed next week
  • Rune Pages– 2 for 1 promotion launched yesterday. Will revisit in 2013
  • Rune Pricing and Design – Evaluate in 2013
  • Champion Pricing– Proposed plan(s) will be presented to the community for feedback in the next few weeks
  • Skin Pricing– likely will try a couple things in 2012, with a long term plan in 2013
  • Bundles – Great feedback in the All About Bundles thread. Expect to see meaningful progress in 2012
  • Summoner Name Changes – Possible sale in 2012 along with another cleansing of unused names
  • Free Champion Rotation – Evaluate in 2013
  • Gifting to Friends – Targeting partial capability in December 2012
  • New Types of Content – Expect the first of many in late 2012
  • Skins for IP – Evaluate in 2013 (I appreciate the helpful poll threads)
  • Legacy Skins – Potential comeback for some legacy skins beginning December 2012
  • Limited Edition Skins– No plans to change

Regarding the Limited Edition skin controversy, there were some great points made on both sides (and some not-so-great points, like trying to make it into a legal issue), but to me it boils down to this: some of our earliest supporters bought Limited Edition skins with the expectation that they would never be made available again, and value that exclusivity highly, while many of our biggest supporters today want nothing more than to get their hands on one of those skins. I would love to find a way to meet the needs of both groups (maybe an auction house where only existing skins could be sold?), but there is no easy solution that accomplishes that goal, and therefore nothing will change for the foreseeable future.

And to those who accuse me or Riot of being greedy or unethical for even considering how to meet the needs of players who tell me that obtaining a certain skin is the one thing they would value above all else, you are flat out wrong. Everything isn’t about money, and considering various ways to make players happy is not unethical. I acknowledge I could have searched old threads first, but raising the issue here is the most efficient way to understand the current range of views among the players.

At the end of the day I will only be successful at my job if I am able to find and implement solutions that, in the aggregate, a) further Riot’s mission to be the most player-focused gaming company in the world, and b) support Riot’s financial health. Most of the initiatives I implement will attempt to accomplish both, or will attempt to improve one without hurting the other. If I am unsure about the ultimate impact on players of a particular idea, I will ask players first (either in the forum or by survey, depending on what information I need). If I am unsure about the financial impact, I will try to test it out first. The topics I have chosen to focus on first from the list above are the ones where I think I can have the most positive impact with the lowest risk of unintended consequences. That view is always evolving and I will continue to read the forums, so please continue to share your thoughts on these topics and others, even though I will not generally respond.

And most importantly, thank you for the warm welcome on this thread and others! I will be MIA for the next few days but will be back on the 19th with more news.

-Hippalus

This new eCommerce Director is 100 times more interactive than the last one. Hell I don't even know who the last one was.

Glad you're the one in charge now, Hippalus.

We, as players, have no reason to trust Riot. They have acted unethically in the past and any trust that existed between Riot and many players is gone. For example, we still have had no response about why the Dark Valkyrie Diana skin was changed after so many people bought the original, nor has Riot apologized for taking our money and changing what we paid for into something totally different. Many people were unable to get refunds and none of us were able to get or money back. Which means Riot still comes out ahead even street acting unethically.

Riot is a company, and the one thing that you can count on companies to do above all else is try to make money at the expense of all else. Until such a time as Riot proves that they value their customers as much as their bottomline, don't expect anyone to trust Riot or not suspect their intentions.

Good guy Hippalus. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with the community about all of these things. It is a void that has needed filled for awhile and I for one am glad that you took up the role. I only look forward to the new ideas you are bringing to the table and the changes that might ensue. Thanks again!

Woah, Hippalus just gave us a rough delivery schedule. Riot has never, ever, actually committed to anything that they have actually followed through on in the estimated timeframe.

Did anyone else bookmark this thread for future reference?

THANKS HIPPALUS

Moneypenny never stepped one toe out of the announcements forum.

Probably why.

Please don't say this bullcrap, really don't. Riot is a complete disgrace for an international company. More so you are a nationalistic company I dare say.
Riot is too pathetic to be even called a joke internationally, fact is Riot IGNORES all their other communities and is only involved with their NA community and has not even made a single attempt or shown any intentions to listen to all their other communities. So don't give this **** of player focussed nin the world, you are only focussed on the players on the servers of your own country and ignore the feedback from the players from the other countries (except the pro's), you guys aren't even willing to communicate with those other communities even if the main language is English and always come up with false excuses (language? The english forums are completely ignored too, timezones? ITS A FORUM FFS). You just split every community off but only talk with the NA one so please don't tell these stupid PR talks of the world, you are just another NA community is the only that counts company, and all your action s show this.

Another proof of this is this complete thread, NA full of answers feedback etc, EU thread? You made it posted for an hour and just like the Riot tradition left it to die because, **** them only NA community matters which is the Riot tradition ever since they started. But hey soon you don't even have to any more, this long lasting neglect is killing of the other forums anyway. But please stop the absolute bull**** of most player centric company in the world, because you only interact with the community of your own country, that's not the world even though some movies claim it is. As far as it goes for being an international company, Riot is a complete disgrace and will probably stay that way if you keep making excuses and do not undertake action or show any initiative to support your other communities out of a narrow minded nationalistic view that reigns at your office.

(Also cheers for Lyte, he seems to be the sole exception that knows that the world is not just the NA community, he is the sole person that also keeps the others informed, so cheers for this guy!)
