[Guide] Shen the Ninja Tank

Welcome to my Shen guide. Updated as of November 2, 2010.

There are two main ways to play Shen.
Jungle Shen and Lane Shen in this guide I'll show you how to play both play styles.

Patch Notes
Release Notes v1.0.0.104 : No changes made to Shen or any that affect Shen.

Introduction
Shen is a great tank that can fill many roles in a team. He can Jungle and tank and also has great lane dominance. Your main role when play Shen is to save as many allies as you can. This guide will not show you how to play AP Shen or DPS Shen.

Jungle Shen

1.Masteries and Summoner Spells.

I personally run a 0/21/9 build.

Defence
3 Resistance
3 Hardiness
4 Evasion
1 Nimbleness
3 Harden skin
2 Defensive mastery
4 Veteran's scars
1 Tenacity

Utility
3 Perservance
1 Haste
4 Awareness
1 Utility mastery

Summoner Spells

Smite and Ghost
One could argue flash, but i prefer ghost.

2. Runes

Armor pen Marks
Dodge Seals
Magic resist per lvl Glyphs
Flat Health Quints.

3. Skill Order

I find it now that 1 point in feint is really all you need to jungle well.

Qwqeereeeqrqqwwrww

Taunt -> Vorpal Blade -> Feint

4. Jungling Pattern
I start at Wolves i kill the big wolf really fast (save smite) and head for CDR golem Finish Wolves -> Wraiths -> Lizard (i usually give this to
my carry) then golem.

The reason i start at wolves and kill one wolf is to jungle as fast as possible.
Shen is a very slow jungler, because he doesn't do a lot of damage unless you max Q first which makes me untanky.

Alternative Jungle Pattern

I usually use this when i don't feel very safe, whether it's because my team all
have 400 health and would get dominated in a level 1 fight or because they have stealth
like Twitch or even Eve.

normal Golem -> Wraiths -> Wolves -> CDR golem -> Lizard (give this to your
carry).

5. Items

a. Start with a Cloth armor and either 5 or 2 health potions and a ward.
Normally i would go for 5 health potions, but if there is a enemy jungler like WarWick, who can get dragon at level 4 without madreds, i usually get 2 health potions and a ward.

b. At the this stage either go build your cloth armor into a heart of gold,
if you have the gold, or just buy boots and some more health potions
and wards.
c. If you haven't already build heart of gold and start building Aegis.
d. Finish Aegis and Mercury Treads.
e. If the team is magic heavy (buy Force of Nature)
If the team is ad heavy finish Randuins Omen.
If their super AD like all AD characters then get Thornmail.
f. At this point if your still feeling not tanky enough, build Sunfire (if AD is the problem) or Force of Nature (if AP is the problem) and if you already have Force of Nature you should probably buy a health item, such as Sunfire cape or Frozen Mallet. Maybe get a Guardian Angel if you feel very tanky already.

Overall

Cloth armor + 5 health potions or 2 health potions and 1 ward ->
Level 1 boots and wards and health potions or Heart of Gold ->
Heart of Gold, finish Aegis and Mercury Treads ->
Force of Nature or finish Randuins -> Stack health (not Warmogs) unless you need MR then buy Force of Nature.

Item list for Shen
Randuins Omen (Very good)
Aegis (Very good)
Sunfire Cape (optional)
Force of Nature (Best you can get for MR so...)
Abyssal Specter (Bad)
Frozen Heart (Bad, you don't need mana silly)
Thornmail (Depends on enemy team)
Ninja Tabi (Mercury Treads are better)
Atma's Impaler (Its alright for like your 6th item
cause you should be super tanky and need dmg)
Banshees Veil (If you really need the passive get it, otherwise no)
Spirit Visage (only if you have heals)
Guardians Angel (Good item after you build Randuins or Force of Nature)
Warmogs (Bad)
Frozen Mallet (It's alright.. if you need the damage and feeling tanky go for it.)
Leviathan (Bad)
AP items (BAD)

Lane Shen

1.Masteries and Summoner Spells.

I personally run a 0/21/9 build.

Defence
3 Resistance
3 Hardiness
4 Evasion
1 Nimbleness
3 Harden skin
1 Defensive mastery
4 Veteran's scars
1 Willpower
1 Tenacity

Utility
3 Perservance
1 Haste
4 Awareness
1 Utility mastery

Summoner Spells

Cleanse and Ghost
One could argue flash, but i prefer ghost.
I take cleanse, because if Galio ultimates me and my carry is getting owned, I can't save him and Shen's main role is to save allies.

2. Runes

Magic Pen Marks
Magic resist per lvl Seals
Magic resist per lvl Glyphs
Flat Health Quints.

The reason i take magic resist seals over dodge or armor seals is because, armor is easily obtained. Whereas the only options for Magic resist is really only Aegis and FoN.

3. Skill Order

I like Feint, where a lot of people think its a uselss skill.

Eqwqereqeerqqwwww
Taunt/ Dash -> Vorpal Blade -> Feint

4. Items
a. Start with a Dorans shield and a health potion.
b. Generally ill buy my boots and what i can of Aegis and buy wards
c. Finish Aegis and Mercury Treads and buy wards
d. Buy Randuins (AD team) or Force of Nature (AP team)
or Thornmail (Super AD team) and buy Elixirs!!!
e. Buy what you didn't buy from above.
f. Finish the game.

Overall
Dorans Shield and Health potion -> boots and part of Aegis
->Aegis and Mercury Treads spend leftover money on wards.
->Buy Randuins or FoN or Thornmail -> Buy whatever you didn't buy before and
Elixirs.

Item list for Shen
Randuins Omen (Very good)
Aegis (Very good)
Sunfire Cape (optional)
Force of Nature (Best you can get for MR so...)
Abyssal Specter (Bad)
Frozen Heart (Bad, you don't need mana silly)
Thornmail (Depends on enemy team)
Ninja Tabi (Mercury Treads are better)
Atma's Impaler (Its alright for like your 6th item
cause you should be super tanky and need dmg)
Banshees Veil (If you really need the passive get it, otherwise no)
Spirit Visage (only if you have heals)
Guardians Angel (Good item after you build Randuins or Force of Nature)
Warmogs (Bad)
Frozen Mallet (It's alright.. if you need the damage and feeling tanky go for it.)
Leviathan (Bad)
AP items (BAD)

Overall Gameplay
As Shen your main goal is to save your carry. That does not mean if your twitch
is lvl 6 and the enemies are lvl 15 to save your twitch. Save whoever is carrying the team that could be Eve with 20 stacks.

A lot of people don't know this, but you can cancel your ult and the person will still get the shield. So a lot of times i will ultimate my carry in a team fight and if hes close '
i'll just cancel out of it and taunt the people attacking him.

Feint should be used after a taunt. Feint can also be used to save you from dots such as ignite and morde's ultimate.

Vorpal blade should almost never be used in a team fight. It just wastes too much energy to be worth it.

Try to taunt the person most dangerous on the enemy team not as many people as possible.
For example if they have twitch (who is far from his team, but close enough to shoot your allies) you should taunt him (one person) over taunting Sona, Taric, Janna ( 3 people).

Use your ultimate to save any ally in need.

Try to use your dash to escape the initial burst.

Shadow dash can force stealth characters out of stealth if you manage to taunt them.

Which do you prefer jungle or lane shen? And also why do you start at wolves and kill one then go do mana golem?

I usually jungle when no wants to jungle, but i'll easy like rammus or anyone else jungle over shen. But if i had a choice i would rather lane.

I do kill one wolf, because i try to jungle as fast as possible so when wolves spawn at 1:40 i kill on really fast and do golem just as it spawns at 1:55.

What do you have against Warmogs? The cost? Actually, what do you have against the high HP items in general like Leviathan as well? Don't they help his passive and make Shen more of a viable threat? Otherwise, you only have your Ult and Taunt to help a team fight if you can't dish out enough damage to make them want to hit you.
