Season Two Regional Spotlight: Europe

Home of the Season One Champions and Runners-up, Europe has been a hotbed of competitive League of Legends since launch. Europe is known for its deep competitive scene, with many teams able to take games off of the best teams in the region, and its wide participation in tournaments. The region is host to a huge number of online tournaments and teams often compete in multiple online tournaments every week. While a few players are able to make a living via streaming, teams are typically more dependent on winning tournaments for their professional careers than North American players. Unlike North America, many of Europe’s top teams are members of longstanding eSports organizations, such as SK Gaming, Fnatic, and Moscow Five. This fiercely competitive region comes to the Season Two World Championship with a mind to show once again they are the best.

Moscow Five BenQ

Moscow Five stands as the undisputed champions of Europe. After exploding on to the competitive League of Legends scene with their victory over Team SoloMid at IntelEM Kiev, Moscow Five continued to dominate by winning the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship without losing a single game. Known for aggressive counter jungling and hyper aggression when they get an advantage, Moscow Five is widely considered Europe’s best hope for a Champion. They are not unbeatable however; Counter Logic Gaming EU managed to defeat them during Dreamhack. However, Moscow Five turned around and smashed the competition at ECC Poland and at the European Regionals. They are a team driven to win above everything else, and a potential match-up between them and the Korean teams is highly anticipated.

Counter Logic Gaming EU

Despite being considered one of Europe’s best teams since its inception, Counter Logic Gaming EU only appeared in the top standings on the Challenger Circuit after their victory over Moscow Five at Dreamhack. After getting knocked out of the qualifiers for Dreamhack, the team flew to Sweden, entered the open qualifiers and went on to win the event without dropping a game. The team also spent time in Korea, competing in Azubu The Champions, where they took second place in Korea’s most watched eSports league. Counter Logic Gaming EU has some of the most popular personalities from Europe and is known for an effective late game style, playing safe in the early and mid-game until they are confident they can win teamfights and take objectives. As the only team that has bested both Korean teams and Moscow Five, Counter Logic Gaming EU has unique insight in to defeating the favorites of the tournament.

SK Gaming

While Moscow Five is known for their relentless aggression and CLG EU is known for their technical execution, SK Gaming is known for their competitive spirit and passion. Star player Ocelote is one of Europe’s most popular streamers and biggest personalities, and the whole team can be heard shouting instruction and encouragement during matches. Though SK Gaming has been competing throughout Season Two, they did not settle on their final roster until ECC Poland, where they took third place. In a stunning upset victory at the European Regionals, SK Gaming defeated CLG.EU 2 – 0 in the semi-finals. SK Gaming’s passion got them this far; we’ll see how they fare up against the world’s best.
