Alistar worthwhile
I'm looking to get a tank, and was wondering if Alistar is worth it. I don't care if he is tricky to play, I just want to know if he can compete at the highest levels, or if I should just use someone more popular.

He's one of the best, if not the best roamer as well as being an initiating tank.

He's very item independent because his skills have so much utility.

His flash + knockup + knockback combo is devastating and has so many uses.

His heal is amazing for pushing.

His ultimate negates the need for going completely tank, and promotes buying some items that add to damage or utility. (Sheen, Shurelya's, Boots of Mobility)

His passive is ok, but it's definitely not the best.

He's also getting a re-work that will improve him overall, but will make him less pushy and more team-fight oriented.

He also synergizes with champions like Blitzcrank, Jarvan, Xin Zhao, and Garen.

He's a very good pick, and should be even better with his re-work.

amumu is better, alistar isn't near good enough. You can't farm at all with him, and if your team isn't excellent you will lose.

Alistar can be a very good tank, but he relies heavily on both competent teammates and making use of his strong early game. If you are going solo queue, he might not be the best pick, but he can be great in a duo (where i play him most) or 5-man premade.
