I've downloaded all of the League of Legends splash screen music from here:

and I listen to it on repeat.

Definitely, but the thing I like about this idea is that we do not need to apply it retroactively or universally (like we would for unique deaths based on damage types) We could just add this to an upcoming skin or champ and slowly thread it into our normal champ output.I think the downside of this feature is that it would literally play once per map unless we also used it as the way that champs respawn after death.

Concerning the summoning circle idea, I think that is a good idea too. It would require a rework of the base platform. I like how it could add some explanation about how champs actually get to the fields of justice to begin with.

I like the idea, I think you are right, it would be a good story moment. However, is more of a Character Team feature than an Environment Team feature. I will run it past them.

So you guys handle terrain design, but do you guys handle creep design? Building design? Map animations? Creep animations? Do you guys just provide concept art or do you guys get involved with sculpting too?

Also, I highly appreciate you taking the time to talk to players. Thank you for that.

No problem, I love talking with you too! The Environment Team is in charge of all of the visual elements that go into a map. We have some guys on our team that primarily do concept drawings (The really rough pencily stuff, not the super painted up promotional stuff). We have some guys that primarily paint. We have some guys that primarily model. We have some guys that primarily world-build (which is taking the models from other artists and arranging them into a level). We have a couple guys that really focus just on the technical side of things, trying to make sure the map runs fast and the artists have functional tools.

At the end of the day we all do a little bit of everything. We spend a good bit of time training every member of our team to be a solid generalist with a really deep specialization. I am a Worldbuilder, but I spend a lot of time drawing, painting and sculpting; in addition to my layout-artist duties.

We work very closely with the Character and Animation teams for the creation of creeps and shopkeepers. We frequently do the initial concept drawings for these assets. But we do not usually handle modeling characters or animating them. We do provide a lot of feedback to the teams that do work on them though.

We work very closely with design, but we do not really push back on design ideas. We want to make sure that our art always improves gameplay clarity, so map-design input is crucial.

We frequently start the conversation about the narrative that is shown in an environment. If you think about the story that is happening in Howling Abyss, we started pursuing those ideas, then showed them to our writers. They took those ideas and expanded on it and developed it into the Howling Abyss lore.

It is a really fun process. I work with very talented people that really know how to push quality. It is so exciting to see these worlds come into existence.

I'm usually in the no music camp because I find the in-game sounds pretty helpful during games (along with only really noticing pings when I hear them). But sometimes I like to listen to chill music when I play to help me keep a level head.

Here are some of my recent favorites:

Hey ChaosPillar,

Our LinkedIn page would be a good place to start ["Inside Riot Games"].

Many of our devs speak at conferences. If you really want to understand the industry and find your place, I would suggest you look at past GDC talks. Not only are these talks absolutely fantastic, you'll find out who the influential members of the game dev community are. From there you'll be able to find more blogs, vlogs, forums, sites, etc. that you'll be able to glean more information from.

As for your champion skin ideas, keep in mind that the community sees hundreds [if not thousands] of these a day. Don't be disheartened! Crank out great ideas and be open to feedback. At the very least, you'll end up learning a lot

In general what would you say you expect recruiting to be like five years from now? Is it expected for the amount of jobs available to continue scaling for a long while or has this been more of a burst of recruitment until you hit a cap of the jobs necessary for the company?
To be honest, I have no clue. I would really like to be able to predict the future, but it's just not something I'm capable of doing...at the moment...:P

You'll get a lot more insight into things by perusing business sources [example: Forbes, Wall Street Journal] and gaming industry specific resources [Gamasutra,forums/blogs/vlogs/etc.]

This has been a very deliberate move on our part, based on the gameplay needs of LoL. The idea behind it is that to increase in-game readability our art need to be organized into a visual hierarchy. Our highest saturation colors and starkest contrast is reserved for Champion ability VFX, UI like Health bars occupy the 2nd priority, Champions themselves occupy the 3rd priority for contrast, saturation, and level of detail. The environments are the "4th Read". Additionally we differentiate between in-lane play space and other environment spaces and try to keep the lanes less colorful and a little darker so visual effects and champions really pop against them. This is the type of thing we are likely to be doing more of in the future.

That being said, we want to preserve the flavor of LoL. We just also need to balance it against design considerations.

Oh, that is a great idea! In the context of E-sports that would be really helpful for clarifying which team is which if you just jump in to spectate a random game. Maybe the Nexus could be a new object that represents the team logo... or all the turrets are themed to their respective teams. That would be really cool! I have no idea if we will do that, but I really like the idea.

Personally, I like to confirm that I am fully available before beginning the application process. Correct me if I'm wrong, but graduating in December means you still have at least one semester/term left. I'd concentrate on coursework over job applications until a month or two before graduation. so, if you don't mind me asking, What do you think are the requirements to apply for Champion Design? are there any specific degrees needed? Since I know that most design roles need at least basic programming knowledge, are there any specific programming languages that you recommend I learn?

I ask because I'm personally very passionate about champion design and regularly design champion concepts as thought exercises. I'm willing to go and learn all the stuff needed to be eligible to apply for such a job
Hey Icraig33,

If the position is open, we will definitely post it on the Careers page under Game Design.

With regards to job requirements, it is dependent on what the team's specifically looking for. If a position opens up, the job description is your best bet to figure out what that might be. The need for programming knowledge, for example, would be listed if it is indeed a necessary skill.

My suggestion is to take a look at blogs, forums, and game design related materials to give you a better idea of what the industry standard is. There are many top game designers who share their work and thoughts regarding game design to the public via blogs/podcasts/etc. Our "Inside Riot Games" page is another great resource you may want to take advantage of.

I really just want to know whether these sorts of things are actually positives on a resume (for Riot specifically) or if they're reasonably unimportant.

Basically in a nutshell I'm currently a Classical Flute Performance major so I have the discipline/communication skills from that major.

I run a lot of guilds/clans for pretty much every game I play, usually reasonably large within the respective communities.

I really enjoy doing research and making long detailed threads/analyses on systems in games I play. One I'm currently working on is an analysis of Honor by collecting a lot of data and trying to parse it effectively.

Anyway, this isn't meant to be a plug or anything, I just legitimately don't know whether these things are useful on a resume specifically when applying to Riot.

Thanks in advance!
Hey Guilty Toad,

Classical Flute Performance entails some background in music theory, composition, etc. This in and of itself MIGHT be something our audio teams are looking for. If there's anything open, it would be posted on our Careers page.

From what you've outlined for me, I would say you should look into Community, Marketing, Player Support, and QA. I don't mean apply to everything. Take a look at the different teams and see if there's something that you're REALLY passionate about.

Definitely mention your experience/interests/projects in a cover letter/your resume. GL HF

Definitely post the same thing and more info if you want to add more colour to it. Kades can probably give you more guidance in that regards.

If you turn pro, you'll be on a P-1A. This is, to my knowledge, non-transferable. Also, pro players are not Rioters. They are professional gamers on their respective teams [teams being participating competitive teams in the LCS].

To my knowledge, we do not directly hire for physical security. However, we do have an absolutely amazing Facilities Team that is world class. They're the ones who make sure our physical office needs are met [sometimes before we even make a request...yeah...they're that amazing]. If you're truly passionate about gaming and want to get into the gaming industry, there are a lot of gaming studios in Canada that need talented analysts.

Vancouver has a few gaming studios and a lot of start ups. Montreal has a bunch of them as well. Toronto's not too shabby either

@ Gløry- Absolutely! We will not add any novel gameplay into SR. We believe in the integrity of the map. Adding environmental Hazards, incidental changes to the fog of war, random events of any kind are completely out of the question.

The context of my comment was if we would ever add those ideas to any map, which we might. Most likely in the context of a brand new map variant. But we have no plans to do so.

I hope that resolves your concern

I have made many contributions here in the forums, and a little bit on reddit regarding Champion changes and the likes.

Here are some of my threads :

-A list of all the changes I'd like to see on almost every Champions now, be it bug fixes, number changes, or just utter reworks of some abilities. I still update it frequently.

-A list of changes and additions for many subjects like Art, PvP.net, tribunal, etc.

-Analysis threads on newly released or relaunched Champions. (Aatrox linked)

I also try to participate in the latest discussions about Champion balance, be it the Skarner thread by RiotScruffy, the Xerath/Yorick threads by Xelnath or the Olaf thread by SmashGizmo. Also made a list for RiotDudeBro concerning the models and splashes for Champions.

The big problem I have is that I'm Canadian with only an high school diploma in my pockets. What would you recommend me to do for my next application attempt ?

I also added you on the client, for more concise discussion purposes.

Thanks for your time.
Hey Wyl,

What I see being the biggest barrier for you is the lack of a Bachelor's. In order to bring someone in on a visa, they typically need a Bachelor's or 3 years of related work experience for every year of a Bachelor's [in this case it would be 12 years of related work experience]. There are a number of visas available, but I believe they all require at least the Bachelor's degree. I'm not a visa expert, so apologies in advance for the lack of detail.

Hey TeeZeee,

I don't have a personal opinion on this as I am not well-acquainted with the programs offered at Full Sail or any other post-secondary institution.

However, I recommend you focus on what's best for you and not what 'might' get you into a company. If you're truly passionate about something, it'll show through the extra-curricular projects you work on, groups you participate in, etc.

A formal education is what you make of it

Thanks in advance~
Hey WanderingBeats,

In order to work on platform/server/client/etc. architecture 'anywhere' [very broad generalization], you would have to be extremely strong in a variety of programming languages [C++ is a must], math, and CS.

We're always looking for individuals who are open to being mentored, but depending on the complexity of the position, that individual might be a mid-level platform architect with 5 years of architecting under their belts.

My suggestion is to look at the job descriptions on our Careers page. There's a lot more information there

I've always enjoyed doing the sort of behind-the-scenes work that goes into stage/broadcasting productions. Now that Riot has the LCS, it's piqued my interest in working on that team. I've been looking at the Riot Careers site for anything I can apply related to that department, and I couldn't find much, if anything.

Is there somewhere else I have to apply to look for a job there? Are there any open positions?

Another thing that I didn't know about was requirements for the position. Obviously if you're applying to a programming job you'd need a CS degree, etc. Is there a certain kind of education you'd need for the area I'm looking to apply for?
Hey The 10th Doctor [ARE YOU ACTUALLY?!?!],

If there are open positions, they'll be listed under eSports or Video Production.

Industry experience is always a plus. There are specific technologies, skills, and competencies for these positions [video editor, audio editor, video/live production, etc], but your best bet would be to do some research into what the industry standards are. There are definitely places where you can learn to do live production.

As always, feel free to post on our "Inside Riot Games" page on LinkedIn

Anyway. Just going to give you guys a hint here.

The less money Riot spends on hiring people for non-game development jobs, then that's the more money that will hopefully go into working on the game and keeping the servers running.

Just something to consider.

I'd love to work for Riot as well, but I believe my title would be something similar to "Lego Builder" or at best, "Lore Brainstormer".

I'd rather not be that hindrance to the game production.

Hey Original Thresh,

If you take a look at our careers page, you'll see that there are many non-game development positions available.

Non-game development positions are equally as important as the game development positions. Rioters bring more to the table than just their expertise in a particular field. It's the combination of specialized hard and soft skills that help bring a game to life.

A 'Lego Builder' or 'Lore Brainstormer [Writer]' wouldn't necessarily hinder game production/development. Personally, I find that a 'Lore Brainstormer' would add value considering that an important component of a great game is the lore/story [think: Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, etc]

Hey meadow,

I apologize for the lack of a response. Our system is by no means perfect, but we're getting there. Chances are that the position was filled and the applications filed were archived. If you'd like to add me on League of Legends, I can help you take a look.

Sorry again for the inconvenience.

Hey KSolaire,

They do exactly what it says they do in the job description. A TL;DR would read something along the lines of: review many hours of video, identify the message we want to share with our audience, create a masterpiece.

Hope that helps

Since my old application was still in there, I was unable to apply again for the same position.

After contacting their support they told me that I needed to get in contact with your guys' HR department, which as it turns out, is quite hard to do. I exhausted every method of contact I could find before finally telling Kades about it and he told me to send him my app and he'd see what he could do with it. I'm not sure, but I don't believe he was able to make much happen.

I was just wondering if you had the ability to clear out my previous app so I could submit it through your application service? If you'd like to talk to me about this privately at all, I'll shoot you a friend request in game. Feel free to accept it if so; if not then just decline.
Hey Alacor,

Please do add me on League of Legends. I'll see if it's something I can help you with.

What's worked for people in the past is to contact us directly on our LinkedIn page. They usually get back to you within a day or so
